M'luru: St Christopher Association organizes free eye check up camp

Mangaluru, Jan 16: To celebrate its 50 years of existence in a meaningful way, St Christopher Association Mangalore (Regd) had undertaken some social service initiatives. As part of its initiatives, an eye check up camp-cum-distribution of spectacles free of cost was organized for the members of Dharmajyothi Social Centre, Vamanjur here. The programme was held in association with Yenepoya Medical College, Deralakatte.

City (south) MLA, J R Lobo, who participated as chief guest, inaugurated the programme and hailed the programme undertaken with the coming together of three organizations backed by social concern. "St Christopher Association has undertaken various programmes on the occasion of 50 years of its inception. It has provided hostel for workers at Rosario and was instrumental in setting up of Maco petrol bunk in 1975. This organization has been undertaking people friendly initiatives and contributing towards the welfare of the society as a whole and also its members. At the same time, 'Dharmajyothi Social Centre' was set up 40 years back in a deserted place here. After this institution was set up, it has been striving to provide various facilities to the poor people living in this area," he stated.

The function was presided over by Sr Joyal, supervisor of Dharmajyothi Social Centre. She explained about the importance of eyes in one's life, and urged people to take up the responsibility of wiping out tears from the eyes of others. She also thanked St Christopher Association and staff of Yenepoya Hospital.

Convener of the golden jubilee programme of the association and its honorary president, Sushil Noronha, narrated the illustrious past the association has traversed during the last 50 years. Coordinator of Dharmajyothi Social Centre, Nagendra Kumar, delivered an introductory address about the institution.

J R Lobo initiated the programme by handing over the request letter pertaining to souvenir being brought out by Christopher Association on this occasion, to the conveners of the souvenir, Godwin Pinto and Denis Lobo. President of Chrisopher Association, Herald D'Souza, welcomed everyone. Secretary, Nigel Pereira, proposed the vote of thanks. S R A convent superior, Sr Reema, Chrstopher Association vice president, Francis D'Souza, and joint secretary, Leena D'Souza, were present. Lilly presented the programme.
