Muscat: Sport talents shine at MCCP Badminton tournament

Muscat, Mar 8: Mangalorean Catholic Center of the parish, conducted a badminton tournament for the first time in the history of MCCP on February 24. The tournament was held at the recreation center of the Royal Hospital.







The tournament saw an overwhelming response with a total registration of 45 teams. Sports lovers and members of MCCP, all the way from Sohar actively participated in the tournament. (Meticulous planning worked went towards completing the matches on time due to overwhelming response from the community. Lots were drawn on the respective groups by Dolly Gomes an ardent supporter for MCCP and lover of sports for smooth running of the matches. Trescilla Menezes took up the responsibility at the registration desk.

The programme commenced at 9 am with a prayer by Melita Alva. The president, Dilip Correa welcomed the gathering. The entire event was conceptualized and organized by Jessie Pereira, vice president sports and finance and Lynel Lobo, sports secretary. The president played the opening strike thereby announcing the opening of the tournament. Praveen Niddodi a very talented compere hosted the formal part of the tournament programme.

Various categories of matches were organized for the children, men and women. Sharath Kumar and Guruprasad were the referees for the matches. Dolly Gomes was instrumental in organizing the entire tournament and forming the teams.

Winners of the different categories were:
Children singles:
Winner: Pearl Menezes
Runner up: Lael Alva

Men’s doubles, below 40:
Winner: Jackson Mendonca and Arul Lobo
Runner up: Glen Monis and Asher Neil D’Cunha

Men’s doubles, above 40:
Winner: Praveen Lewis and Owin Lewis
Runner up: Praveen Pinto and Ajith D'Costa

Ladies doubles, below 40
Winner: Caroline Pinto and Reshma D'Costa
Runner Up: Cynthia Saldanha and Dorine Rebeiro

Ladies doubles, above 40
Winner: Priya Qadros and Flavia D'Souza
Runner up: Shaila D'Souza and Sandra Menezes

Ashok Pinto proposed the vote of thanks. Sandeep Fernandes one of the sponsors for the day was presented with a floral bouquet. He also gave the winners and runners up the medals and trophies along with Dilip Correa and Jessie Pereira.

MCCP executive committee is indebted to their sponsors for their wholehearted support toward the tournament to make it a memorable one. Monica Dantis and Loy Castelino (sponsor for eggs from Barka Farms) earned special appreciation.
