Manohar Parrikar appointed as new Goa Chief Minister

Updated

Panaji, Mar 12 (Agencies): Goa Governor Mridula Sinha on Sunday appointed Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar as the new Chief Minister of Goa.

Parrikar has been asked to prove majority on the floor of the Goa Legislative Assembly "15 days after administration of oath of office and secrecy", a letter issued by Secretary to the Governor Rupesh Kumar Thakur said.

The letter said that Parrikar had submitted evidence of support of 21 MLAs before the Governor.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which has 13 MLAs, is supported by three legislators each of the Goa Forward Party and the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party and two Independent legislators.

According to Union Minister for Roads, Transport, Highways and Shipping Nitin Gadkari, Parrikar will resign as Defence Minister before he takes oath of office as Goa Chief Minister.

Parrikar on Sunday evening had met Goa Governor Mridula Sinha, with MLAs of the BJP and other parties, to stake claim to form the government.

The BJP in Goa had on Sunday unanimously passed a resolution electing Parrikar as the legislature party leader.

The Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP) had said that it would support the BJP in the state in its efforts to form a government, only if Parrikar was made the Chief Minister.

The BJP has 13 MLAs in Goa after the results of the Assembly elections were announced on Saturday. On Sunday, Parrikar met the Governor with the BJP MLAs, 3 MLAs of MGP, 3 Goa Forward Party MLAs and 3 Independent MLAs, thus taking its number up to 22 in the 40-member Assembly.

Speaking about the developments, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari said to ANI, “MGP and Goa Forward Party said during our discussions that only if Manohar Parrikar becomes Goa CM candidate, then we will support BJP.”

However, he added, ”Parrikar will have to resign as Defence Minister before becoming Goa CM, but he has not done it yet”.

“This is a mandate given by the people, though we fell short of majority. Together we have completed the magic figure of 21,” Parrikar said addressing the media later.

“We met the Governor, and we are expecting an invitation. Once we receive it, we will consult our colleagues and decide the date for swearing in,” Parrikar added.

The Congress, which won 17 seats in Goa, will thus once again have to sit in the Opposition, after doing so from 2012 to 2017.

Fact of the mater is Mr. Pariker is suffocated working with Mr. Modi. As it is known that Mr. Modi works like a Dictator and his cabinet people have hardly any say on anything. Nothing else! so he wants to run away from Delhi or else what was the need for him to come down to Goa ? de-promoting himself ?

    Mr.Lewis,Mr.Sri,Mr Anirudh

Sirs,Absolute majority is good for the progress of the country. NDA or BJP emerging with coalition partners is nothing but hard bargain.

People's mandate need to be respected by all parties. This is the basis of healthy democracy.

Any defection after the poll results announced is against the citizens verdict. This pure breach of 'anti defection law'.
I propose 'Association of democratic reforms' to bring a law which bars elected candidates to crossover to any party for minimum of 5 years. No merger should be allowed even 2/3 rd of majority crossover to form any party or to form new party. In such that case state should be under President's rule with District commissioner will be in charge with weekly reporting to the Governor. No immediate family members of the defected candidate is allowed to contest until complete tenure of the government.

Also I would like to propose no former militant or organisation which acted against the sovereign of India by death and destruction should be allowed to contest an elections. Communalism should be equally treated as anti nationals.

Finally, If quota is allocated in other fields, it should also implemented on political parties.
India can't usher good beginning unless inclusive of all section of the societies. BJP which failed to honour Muslims in particular in UP signals PM Modi develope India by 2022 with minority Muslims treated second class citizen as stated by RSS Gururji's.

Do we have quota in Pakisthan for the numerically inferior hindus. will a Hindu ever become president of Pakisthan leave alone a panchayath president. they are treated lesser than dogs why?. their number is shrinking by the day. it was 25% at the time of partition now it is less than 2%. kaafirs are treated inferior why? if muslims become majority in this country will the same magnonimity given to minorities in India?

If this twisted logic holds, so many governments across the country and world will have to go.

Ultimately elections are a game of numbers and the same numbers also tell you that the BJP has lost in 27 seats. The vote share card is not valid to form a government with GFP and MGP who have won seats by defeating BJP candidates.

The Goa Governor has appointed someone as the Chief Minister who is not even the member of the legislative assembly, who belongs to the party which fell significantly short of majority, was not even the single largest party, and whose CM lost elections from both constituencies he contested from. All this happening within 24 hours of election results been announced! Giving him 15 days to prove majority. Why 15 days? Doesn't that means the BJP has not secured majority support until now? Are you giving 15 days to lure or coerce support?

BJP's C.M has lost, 15 of their 21 MLAs have lost, 7 of their 12 ministers have lost, 3 Independents backed by them have lost.

When majority of your minister lose, it means that BJP has failed in administration and even a 'SLEEPING' Parrikar is INCOMPETENT as seen during his stint as a Defence Minister.

For more than two decades, whenever BJP emerged as single largest party, all dongi's prevented BJP coming to the power by joining hand together (even with muslim league, communists etc) giving only one excuse like "to prevent communal forces".

In Delhi also they supported AAP to prevent BJP.

Even in UP, just before counting Akilesh said he will not hesitate to join with BSP to prevent BJP coming to power.
Now BJP is not untouchable to anyone. Even congress MLA's are ready to support BJP. BJP paying congress with same coin.

I really feel pity for the congi's like Perinje/SMR/ Flavian, sampath etc. "Maadiddu Unno Maharaya." Practice before you preach. Or ask Congress to handover BBMC to BJP and then leave GOA/ Manipur for them! hahaha

Welcome to the party my friend.
    Er ol marre, suddhi ijji.
By the by, Goa people dint give a Bag packing result as you claim. What happend in Punjab, Uttarakand & UP are bag packing result to the incumbent Govts. Manipur and Goa is a split verdict, or in other words, Hung assembly. People over there are confused whether to opt a frying pan or fire. What more options Goa have ? Presidents Rule ? thats again BJP rule in another form.

The verdict of Goa is due to internal splits in BJP after Parikar left Goa & lighthandness of BJP high command at the time of election sue to concentration in UP. Had Parikar was brought back to Goa may be 3 months back, result would have been different. BJP is in power , so its obvious independents will support BJP. Everything is as per law, nothgin is undemocratic. Seems like you forgot Congress-JDS Bhai Bhai for BBMP despite BJP being the single largest party, why Kolaveri D now ? Everything is fair in Politics. Take a chill pill.

People are been cheated, people voted the party whom they trust, but the trust is broken as politicians join hands with the party's whom people never trusted. what is the point of voting if this is the case it is better not to vote.

For a good democratic country and to safeguard the interest of the common people in general and the people at large in particular, a strong opposition is a must. Even Churchill at the peak of his popularity after the IInd World War, was rejected by the people of England, fearing he would turn dictator. So, please ensure our country has a strong opposition as well.

Remember? In 1996 Lok Sabha, BJP was the single largest party with 161 MPs. But Congress made Deve Gowda a PM, while Janata Dal had only 79 MPs!

Remember? In BBMP 2015, Bengaluru, BJP won 100 out of 198 wards. A majority! Still Congress used resort politics to steal the Mayor post.

Remember? In 2004 Karnataka, seats were - 81 BJP, 63 Cong and 48 JDS. How did Congressis get CM post?

Tonight the same Congressisis are crying that BJP is forming a government in Goa! They are talking of "single largest party"!

SMR and others you forgot what had happened in 1996. When BJP emerged as single lqargest party all others who got 10 to 15 seats got together and ran the govnt at the centre. Did they have people's mandate then? Other day SP and BSP was planning to come together after exit polls when they realised BJP will be single largest party in UP. fortunately BJP came out winning. So conveniently you forget everything that happened. Remember DelhI in 2013. AAP formed govt with Congress help. Did they have mandate? Did you question then? They why now

What BJP is attempting is nothing but a coup against people’s mandate. Is this a party of morals? They’ve been defeated and yet it is indulging in horse-trading by promising ministries like distributing sweets.”

Starting with Karnataka under former CM Yeddyurappa 'operation kamala' became much suited weapon for poaching opposition party it may be Northeastern state or Goa wherever numbers fall short.

Is BJP a National democracy of Horse trading or National democratic front?
