Kundapur, Mar 17: A house at Herikudru village in the taluk beside the national highway 66 caught fire accidentally and burnt down on the night of Thursday March 16. The house belonged to Stany D'Silva from Herikudru.

Stany D'Silva, who is unmarried, was the sole occupant of this house. It is learnt that one of his sisters is employed in a foreign country.

At around 8 pm on Thursday, fire got ignited in a portion of Stany's house. No one knows how the fire started. At Herikudru, houses are spread out at a little distance from each other, and people living near the spot had thought that Stany had heaped waste and set it on fire. However, after the fire grew in size and the flames began to leap, they realized that the house was aflame. Stany too realized late that his house was on fire and shouted out for help.

The fire brigade was sounded immediately. The locals joined the fire personnel in dousing out the fire. It is suspected that a short circuit which happened in the rear of the house could have ignited it. Stock of firewood stored in the back too burnt down in the fire. A loss has been estimated at five lac rupees.
