Rahul, Tejaswini, Neeraj claim titles at domestic shooting meet


New Delhi, Mar 20 (IANS): Rahul Punia of the Navy won the men's 50m Rifle Prone title beating Olympian Sanjeev Rajput in the final of the XII Sardar Sajjan Singh Memorial Masters Shooting Competition at the Karni Singh Shooting Range here on Sunday.

Meanwhile, 2010 World Champion Tejaswini Sawant of Maharashtra won the women's 50m Prone event and Army shooter Neeraj Kumar pocketed the men's 25m Rapid Fire Pistol title in the other key events on the day.

Rahul shot a score of 620.4 to qualify in fourth place for the eight-man final while the experienced Sanjeev finished on top of the qualifying field with a score of 623.2.

Among other key names to get to the 50m Rifle Prone final were national squad shooters Sushil Ghaley and Satyendra Singh of the Army.

Sushil landed a bronze with a score of 226.9 in the final. Rahul finished with 249.9 at the end of the 24-shot final, a massive 2.1 points ahead of Sanjeev who finished with 247.8.

In the women's 50m Rifle Prone, Tejaswini shot 621.9 to claim gold, while another veteran Kuheli Gangulee of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) bagged the silver with a score of 619.

Aditi Singh of Haryana took the bronze with a score of 617.

In the Men's 25m Rapid Fire Pistol, 22-year old armyman Neeraj Kumar, who recently finished sixth at the New Delhi World Cup, struck gold with a final round score of 28.

Fellow armyman and Olympian Gurpreet Singh got the silver shooting 26 in the final while the bronze went to Anish of Haryana who shot 21.

Earlier, Neeraj had also topped the qualifying round with a score of 580 and Gurpreet was second with a score of 576.

It was a good day for young Anish of Haryana as he also won the junior men's 25m Rapid Fire Pistol shooting 22 in the final to edge out teammate Adarsh Singh who shot 20.

The bronze went to Thomas George of Kerala who shot 17.

Anish made it to the final finishing second in qualifying with a score of 569, behind Anhad Jawanda of Punjab who shot 575 to finish on top of the qualification ladder. Anhad eventually finished sixth in the finals.

In the junior men's 50m Rifle Prone event, Tamil Nadu's V. Sarvesh won the gold with a final round score of 246.6, ahead of Delhi's Md. Oamroos who finished with 243.7.

Niraj Kumar of the National Cadet Corps (NCC) took the bronze.

Ku. Priya of NCC won the junior women's 50m Rifle Prone gold with a score of 616.1. The silver went to Madhya Pradesh's Pasiddhi who shot 614.5 while the bronze medal went to Ayushi Podder of West Bengal who finished with a score of 610.3.
