Like cows, farmers too need to be saved: Sena MP

Mumbai, Apr 3 (PTI): In a sarcastic take on BJP-ruled states enacting laws making the punishment for cow slaughter harsher, the Shiv Sena today said if there was a bitter penalty for killing cows, governments too were liable to be held responsible for farmer suicides.

"There are talks of a state handing out death penalty to those who slaughter cows...Then, murder charge should also be invoked against governments for driving farmers to commit suicide," Sena MP Sanjay Raut told reporters here. "Both farmers and cows have the right to live. Like cows, even farmers need to be saved," he added.

The ruling alliance partner also demanded a uniform law on cow slaughter.Notably, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Raman Singh said on Saturday that those who kill cows in the state would be "hanged".

Last week, BJP-ruled Gujarat passed a law making cow slaughter punishable with life term. In March 2015, the BJP-led Maharashtra government had enforced the Maharashtra Animal Preservation (Amendment) Act, banning the slaughter of bulls and bullocks.

"Farmers going on a strike means the state is heading towards lawlessness. The opposition's Sangharsh Yatras won't work (in Maharashtra). The government should take firm steps to help the distressed farmers. Otherwise, it should be held responsible for their plight," Raut said.

He demanded a uniform law across the country against cow slaughter. The Sena MP said the government should to take the responsibility of these animals (cows) when they get old.

He also sought to know how the country remained one of the largest exporters of meat in the world when a "pro-Hindutva" government was in power. "In the last two years, the export of beef has increased substantially," Raut claimed.

Switzerland and India are united in their love for the cow. Unlike many Indians though, the Swiss have no qualms about tucking into beef.

The cow is an integral part of the Swiss landscape and an important part of its economy. Their milk goes into making Swiss chocolate and cheese and they are a tourist attraction unto themselves. The zeal with which Indian tourists take pictures of Swiss cows is only matched by westerners clicking away at the cows loitering on Indian roads.

The Swiss love their beef and consume around 28 kilos of beef and veal per person every year compared to a measly 0.5 kilos per Indian. Switzerland loves its cows. But unlike India, there is no merging of the bovine and divine. This adoration of cows along with an appetite for beef is not seen as a contradiction but the natural order of things here. The Swiss express their attachment to the animals in the way they treat them during their short but productive lives. Animal welfare laws are very strict.
If there is any contradiction, it is in India where beef eating and beef eaters are forced underground while cows are often left to fend for themselves by foraging for garbage.

Now with new law nearly 3 crores are directly or indirectly affected in UP alone with losses of Rs 11,000 crores.

Swiss are at least lucky to have bite of Chocolate. In India with all those bans still children can't get milk of fresh milk and die of malnourishment.

Is our mass media will ever focus on the real issues?
