Mysuru, May 19: A female student of an engineering college, who had loved and married her lover six months back, tried to end her life by dousing herself with petrol and then trying self-immolation. The girl in question, Akshata (21), daughter of Rame Gowda, resident of Gantori Extension in the city, stands admitted into K R Hospital here with critical burn injuries.

Akshata is a final year student of the government engineering college here. She used to attend the college daily from  her residence at Gangotri Extension. She fell in love with Srinivas from Kurubarahundi village in Chamarajanagar taluk, who works as bus driver of Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation. The two got married six months back, and Akshata continued her education thereafter.

Akshata encountered stiff opposition from her parents for this alliance. Reportedly, the two got married in spite of this opposition. Four months back, Akshata had visited the town police station at Chamarajanagar to complain that her parents were harassing her, but the police had counselled with her and sent her back without registering a case.

Even after marriage, Akshata was under pressure to leave Srinivas. On Wednesday night, the couple was in the city. Srinivas left for Chamarajanagar on Thursday morning, telling his wife that he needed to report for duty. Akshata, out of suspicion, accompanied her father, Rame Gowda, to Chamarajanagar, a little while alter and visited KSRTC bus depot at around 8.30 am. She was told by the staff of Chamarajanagar depot that Srinivas had not reported for duty. Aklshata, who came out of the depot, poured petrol on herself and set herself ablaze. By the time Rame Gowda came out of the bus depot, Akshata was covered by flames. By the time nearby residents came and doused the flames. Akshata had suffered 80 percent injuries.

Police personnel led by sub-inspector of town station, Mahadevayya, shifted Akshata to district hospital at Chamarajanagar. From there, the doctors referred her to K R Hospital here. The reason for this drastic step is not known.
