Mangaluru, Jul 24: The production of clay vessels in India is an ancient craft. Clay being alkaline in nature, helps in neutralising the pH balance of food stored in it, by interacting with the acid present in the food. For the first time in Mangaluru,a local enterprise Pawan Corporation has taken the initiative to introduce a variety of clay products for the benefit of Mangaluru citizens.

The company has an exclusive outlet in Mangaluru and has also appointed dealers across the district of Dakshina Kannada to cater to the ever growing demand of clay products.

History and benefits of clay items

The history of clay artifacts in India dates back to 6,000 BC. Many of the forms, techniques and decorative designs from this period are still being used today. Pottery is now a famous art form in India, and it is slowly gaining awareness as functional items as well. Various platforms, including potters' markets and online pottery boutiques have contributed to this trend.

Indians have again started to use clay items . Cooking in aluminium and steel items is quite harmful for humans. If the metals accumulated in the body reach beyond a limit, they will start getting stored in the muscles, kidneys, liver, bones etc.

Using earthen pots is the best alternative. By using earthen pots for cooking food, the body gets necessary minerals through the food. The primary health benefits of clay pot cooking come from its ability to circulate steam throughout cooking. This provides plenty of moisture and means that you can cook with less oil and fat.

The refrigerator works on the principle of evaporation. Water from the upper chambers drips down the side, and gets evaporated taking away heat from the inside, leaving the chambers cool. The top upper chamber is used to store water. A small lid made from clay is provided on top. A small faucet tap is also provided at the front lower end of chamber to tap out the water for drinking use. In the lower chamber, two shelves are provided to store vegetables, fruits and milk etc.

Thank you 'Daiji' for bringing out this brilliant article on usage of vessels made out of clay and beautiful photographs provided by Dayanand Kukkaje.

When I read this article, I am so nostalgic about my childhood days (till the age of 20 years) in Mangalore that almost I ate food prepared by my mom from the vessels entirely made out of clay. The food was so tasty, healthy and hygienic.

Quite recently, we started using the clay vessels in the gulf for cooking after reading a youtube message from a doctor giving health information and comparison between using clay vessels and aluminium / steel vessels. Following are some of the advantages of using clay vessels:

    (1) Food made from clay is full of aroma and nutritious
    (2) It is non-toxic
    (3) Clay is alkaline in nature, which helps in neutralizing the pH balance of the food by interacting
with the acid present in the food.
    (4) No extra oil is needed.
(5 ) Improves metabolism and virility

Even ancient Romans who were fond of good food used clay pots to cook meat though they had bronze and iron for other things. They knew that the food tastes better if slowly cooked in a clay pot. In Europe, in some countries, you can buy Roman clay pots with flat bottom which can be used for slow cooking in the oven. In India unfortunately the habit dies since people consider it as a "peasant" habit and prefer shiny stainless steel pots.

    Jeniffer,

When you said that dating back to 20 years.....
My childhood days or school days such was the living trend.
No electricity, tap water, no radio (only neighbours Bush or Murphy brand enough for the locality). But the curry especially mango curry man ! No finger licking the Mango seed was enough. Till date I have not given up my old habbits when Mango curry is cooked in Kuwait

Lovely. I am a proud owner of a few treasured items of earthen cookware. A couple of them dating back to twenty years. Seeing me putting them to multiple uses, my relatives in UK hunted relentlessly for a pot with flat bottom that can be placed on the flat burner that are in use at their place. Obvious that the clay pots come with concave base.

Can the producers take this in consideration and come up with a few flat bottomed pots ? I will be the first one to buy and courier them off to its seekers.

Great concept. Those who had tasted food in eartheware and water stored in earthen filters or huge water storage pots would know the benifits better.Especially, fish/meat cooked in eartenwears would give added flavor or taste when warmed on fire following day. Finger licking taste. Frankly speaking sometime finger licking would make the utensils so clean that hardly thre could be any drop left.

Food kept overnight in metallic utensils, results with black spots on the pot, which gradually end up as holes at that spot. This does not happen with earthen pots - no matter you keep spiciest or acidic-most food for a week, the food goes tastier and no signs of erosion/corrosion appear on the pot.
