Karkala, Aug 12: “It is necessary in every educational institute to stress on research and invention. The encouragement given by the government, their subsidiaries and educational institutes toward new research and invention is welcome. It is necessary for importance to be given to technology,” opined National Institute of Technology Surathkal director Prof Karanam Uma Maheshwar Rao.
He spoke after inaugurating the seminar and exhibition of the 40th engineering student project series held jointly by Nitte Technological University and Karnataka state Science and Technology Board. “Students must concentrate on subjects of their interest. On obtaining an engineering degree in India nearly twelve lac students are on the look out for jobs every year. It is necessary to find out if they are employable. Students must develop skills that are necessary for work. Students should be guides in problem solving instead of being a problem for the country.”
Chief guest, Karnataka Council for technological Up-gradation, industry and commerce department managing director, Anil Uppin said, "Nowadays the government prioritises research. Commerce by women gets a fillip as part of women empowerment. Government also provides subsidy for purchase of technical machinery for increased income by use of technology in industry, agriculture and other such sectors.”
Guest of honour, Karnataka state science and technology educational board secretary Prof S Subramanian said that the decade between 2010-2020 can be called the decade of invention. “India has secured the 60th place among countries which are ahead in invention. It is commendable that scientists and students are writing a foreword for new inventions while preventing pollution.”
President of the programme, Nitte University chancellor and president, N Vinay Hegde in his address said that the present day students have achieved a great deal in education but are weak in technological knowledge. “Students should give up the intention of preparing projects to obtain a degree only. Teachers must guide the students to convert their models to patents. The treasure of excellent knowledge of professors in IIT and NIT can be transferred to students through technology.”
Fortieth series engineering student project seminar and exhibition, organic fuel project programme 'Technical Compendium' was released by Anil Uppin. It is a collection of the summary of selected projects by students. Prof Karanam Uma Maheshwar Rao released the technical compendium and CD.
Nitte Technological University principal Dr Niranjan N Chiplunkar welcomed the gathering. Teachers of the university said a prayer. Karnataka state science and technical education board executive secretary Dr S G Srikanteshwaraswamy delivered the keynote address, chief organizer of the programme, Dr Radhakrishnan explained the blueprint of the programme. Bio-fuel cell chief scientific officer and organizer S N Sondoor proposed the vote of thanks. Humanities department assistant professor Vishwanath compered the programme.
More than 200 models by students were exhibited here after the hall programme. More than 500 engineering students, more than 125 professors, more than 75 experts from Indian institute of science and other science and technological institutes participated in the event.
