US threats of military intervention in Venezuela unacceptable: Lavrov

Moscow, Aug 16 (IANS): Russia's Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Wednesday described the threats of a military intervention in Venezuela made by US President Donald Trump as "unacceptable".

Lavrov was at a joint press conference in Moscow following bilateral talks with his Bolivian counterpart, Fernando Huanakuni Mamani, as he criticised recent comments by Trump regarding a possible US military intervention in the South American country, Efe news reported.

"We are united in the need to overcome the existing disagreements in the country by peaceful means through a nationwide dialogue as soon as possible, without any external pressure, not to mention the unacceptability of the threats of military intervention in the internal affairs of this country," Lavrov said.

Trump on Friday had said that the US had many options for Venezuela, "including a possible military option, if necessary".

"Venezuela is a mess. It's a very dangerous mess and a very sad situation," Trump added.
