Chicago records 500th homicide in 2017


Chicago, Sep 19 (IANS): Chicago, one of the largest US cities, recorded the 500th homicide of 2017 with 10 people killed over the weekend.

The figure was revealed on Monday by data collected by the Chicago Tribune. The city had reported its 500th homicide last year in August, the deadliest in decades, reports Xinhua news agency.

The latest homicide took place on Sunday night when a 48-year-old woman was shot dead near her home in the city's southwest suburb.

Chicago has had 2,721 people shot so far this year, down 11.9 per cent from 3,087 reported in the same period last year.

As a measure to rein in shooting incident in the city, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel has announced some 1,000 officers would be added to the police force over a two-year period.

Chicago has reported the highest number of murders among US cities over the past two decades.
