Puttur: Insult to Deyi Baidethi statue - bail plea turned down again

Puttur, Oct 12: The fifth additional district court here turned down the bail plea moved by the person who has been arrested on the charge of insulting Deyi Baidethi, a practitioner of native medicine and mother of legendary heroes of Tulu folklore, who is held in high esteem, by posing in a vulgar pose with her statue and posting the photo on social media. His earlier bail plea had been rejected by the JMFC court here.

Abdul Haneef from Ishwaramangala in the taluk is the main accused in the case. He had been arrested by police peronnel of Sampya station on September 10.

When the bail plea came up for hearing in the JMFC court, the public prosecutor had argued against granting bail. The court had upheld his plea. The bail plea was thereafter filed in the additional district court, challenging the order of the lower court. Judge of the court, Ramachandra, who heard the petition, declined to grant bail.

The fact that Haneef had clicked photograph of himself in the company of Deyi Baidethi's statue, which stands at a herbal garden at Mudipinadka, Badagannur village, and that the picture had been posted on social website, had come to light on September 9 night. On the next day, taluk Billava Association filed a complaint in the police station, and the accused was arrested the same day and produced in court. This incident had evoked many protests, processions, condemnations, processions etc in coastal districts of Karnataka.
