Udupi: Farmers, scientists to interact at Krishi Mela on Oct 14, 15

Udupi, Oct 13: The Zonal Agricultural and Horticultural Research Station, Brahmavar under the jurisdiction of University of Agricultural and Horticultural Sciences, Shivamogga on October 14 and 15, will organise a two-day 'Krishi Mela', informed assistant research and expansion director of KVK Brahmavar, Dr S U Patil.

Addressing the press meet, on Wednesday, October 11, he further said, "The mela is held in collaboration with Agricultural Diploma College, Brahmavar, Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Brahmavar, Agricultural and Horticultural Research Station, Ullal, Directorate of Cashew and Cocoa Development, Cochin NABARD, Mangaluru, Department of Agriculture, Horticulture, Watershed Department, Animal Husbandry, Sericulture Fisheries and Forestry Udupi, SKDRDP, Udupi, District Krishik Samaja of Udupi and Mangaluru under the sponsorship of Canara Bank, Syndicate Bank, Corporation Bank, Karnataka Bank and Vijaya Rural Development Foundation, Mangaluru."

The main objective of this mela is the transfer of latest agricultural technologies through demonstrations, discussions, field visits in the Zonal Agricultural and Horticultural Research Sation through seminars-cum-interactions of scientists and farmers. In general, this is the festival of farmers. This mela will provide a platform to the farmers to solve their problems at the field.

Seminars are arranged for Krishi Mela. On day one, seminar on 'cashew, cocoa, pepper and other vegetable crops will be held. Day two seminar will cover 'Profitable integrated farming systems', 'Water Conservation and Ground water recharge' and 'Cultivation of Flower crops'. Seminars will be delivered by the eminent scientists of UAHS, Shivamogga, scientists of other elite national institutes and progressive Farmers. Farmers can also interact with scientists freely to clarify field-related problems, during the mela.

The mela will be inaugurated by minister of Fisheries, Youth and Sports Welfare and district-in-charge minister Pramod Madhwaraj. The programme will be presided over by Dr P Narayanaswamy, vice chancellor, UAHS, Shivamogga, Shobha Karandlaje, member of parliament, Udupi-Chikmagalur constituency, will inaugurate the Krishi Mela exhibition. Diankara Babu, president, Zilla Panchayat, Udupi will inaugurate the Hydrophonics fodder unit on campus.

About 200 stakeholders are expected to put up their stalls to show their agriculture technologies and recent farm machineries. Organisers have requested farmers to participate in large numbers and avail the benefits of the mela.

The main attractions of this Mela are agriculture technologies and recent farm machineries. The attractions like fodder production for dairy animals through Hydrophonics,  high yielding rice varieties and seed production, preparation of Dapog nursery and SRI method of paddy cultivation, CO-4 fodder grass demonstration, multi storied cropping system and nutrient management in coconut and arecanut, cashew grafting and soil and water management in cashew gardens, demonstration of organic manure compost, vermi compost and azolla, dairy, poultry, goat, rabbit, duck, piggery and fisheries demo units, exhibition and demonstration of agricultural implements, demonstration of value added food products, exhibition and sale of minor millets like Sateria, Savi and Baragu, exhibition and sale of decorative nursery plants, and attractive exhibition of agricultural machines and equipments will be part of the programme.
