Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Oct 18: The state high court, which has been considering a writ petition relating to controversy over renaming of Light House HIll Road as Mulky Sunder Ram Shetty Road, has vacated the stay order issued in the matter. At the same time, it has ordered for status quo to be maintained till the writ petition is disposed off.

As per an order issued by the under secretary in urban development department, the proposal of the city corporation to rename the road between Ambedkar Circle and Catholic Club via Light House Hill had been permitted to be renamed as Mulky Sunder Ram Shetty Road in honour of the former chairman of Vijaya Bank. After this decision faced opposition and the renaming was kept in abeyance, it was questioned in the high court through a writ petition, the high court had granted stay against the implementation of the order.

Through an interim order, the high court has asked the parties to the suit to maintain status quo. As per the interim order, the writ petition filed by former president of Vijaya Bank Workers Organization, Mulky Karunakar Shetty was accepted and the high court ordered status quo. In this case, principal secretary in the department of urban development, deputy commissioner of Dakshina Kannada, city corporation commissioner and project officer have been named as defendants. The order of status quo will be in force till the writ petition is disposed off.

When the petition will be disposed off? Finalise it early and settle the matter. Why unnecessary curiosity? Let us assume that . Light House Hill road means as good as St.Aloysius College Road.

I had appealed before, I appeal once again: Please take up the' Old Kankanady Road' that runs close to Fr Muller hospital and get it named in whosoever name you want to. It is a orphan road, road filled with potholes, but is much longer than the disputed road. No one will object for re-naming this road. Anyone wants their name on this road may apply to city corporation and I am sure you will be permitted to put as many name plaques as you wish on the sides of the road. Once you take up this road, I presume you will see that it is maintained well. Commuters using this road will surely remain grateful to you.

Before fighting to rename the road, the honourable high court should see if pedestrains can walk on this road without any problem. The corporation should be held responsible for all the confusion.
