Udupi: Khazi says only groom can pay dowry in Islam at mass wedding

Udupi, Oct 23: “Only the groom can pay dowry in Islam. However increasing incidents of dowry these days are an anxious development,” said Udupi Khazi P A Ibrahim Bekal.

He was speaking in a three-day long mass wedding of poor girls held at Badar Jamia masjid premises here as a part of anniversary celebrations of Tipu Sultan welfare association on Saturday, October 21.

“The participation of young men is important in stopping dowry system. Every youngster should take a vow not to receive dowry to put an end to the practice. The cooperation of parents is necessary in this work,” he said and explained the history of Islam about dowry.

The wedding of Ansif-Nasima, residents of Kolpe Nelyadi and Hameed, Dendoorkatte resident and Zeenath, Malloor resident were performed by Udupi Khazi P M Ibrahim. The brides were presented five sovereign gold and clothes and the grooms were gifted with clothes on the occasion.

Belapu gram panchayat president Devi Prasad Shetty announced that the two couples who got married will be given sites at Belapu.

Sadat Tanjal Guruvayanakere, minority commission president M M Gafoor, Muloor Al Ihsan education center manager U K Mustafa Saadi, BJP leader Suresh Shetty Gurme, businessman Rizwan Bapnad, Tippu Sultan welfare association president Nawaz Ibrahim, Congress minority unit president H Abdulla, Kaup municipal council vice president Usman Kaup, Ambedkar committee honorary president Vishwanath N Belapu. SSF district president Mohammed Ashraf Amzadi, Kaup Rotary club president Zeba Selvan, Belapu Badar Jamia masjid president Haji Karim, Belapu Minara Jamia masjid president Mushtak Saheb, Minara masjid Khateeb Abdul Hassan, Kaup municipal council member Imran, Belapu youth congress chief secretary Sadakathulla were present.

Abdul Rehman Razwi welcomed. Irshad Kodi compered the programme.

    Yes, Khazi is perfect, According to Holy Koran ,groom must give MEHER to bride in the form for materials or cash to help bride and her family. But I think only in undevided South Kanara bride burdened with dowry system, rest of SK I never heard of this system..Insha Allah our young society will change the whole picture of young groom beggery and become true followers of prophet Muhammed Sallallah alleviasallam.
