Four Kerala women apply to perform Haj sans 'mehram'

New Delhi, Nov 20 (IANS): Four Muslim women from Kerala have applied to go on Haj without 'mehram or male guardian, Union Minority Affairs Minister Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said on Sunday.

"Four Muslim women from Kerala have filled the form to go on Haj without a mehram. Earlier, women were not allowed to go on Haj without accompanying mehram. The Narendra Modi government has allowed willing women to perform Haj without male guardians," Naqvi tweeted.

The Minister did not share the identity of the women.

As per the new Haj policy, women above 45 years of age can apply to go on Haj without a mehram. The recommendation was made by a committee constituted by the minority ministry earlier this year to streamline the country's Haj policy.

However, the recommendation has drawn flak from a number of prominent Muslim clerics and organisations who called it "un-Islamic" and "against the Sharia".

However, the government went ahead to accept the recommendation and made it part of the new Haj policy.

Baap re baap. Kya theer maara BJP ne. What an achievement sir. I feel pity for these people who have nothing to prove their performance. To hide their failure, they give childish achievement to media like issuing visa for Pakistani national for treatment, allowing Haj without male companion. How desperate they are to fool people.

Since the saudi govt has relaxed the rules, 4 women can travel without Meharam..... If the old rules were not modified, then how India can send these 4 women ... India from the earlier days , was not putting any restrictions on travel .... It is only because the rules are changed by saudi govt ... the things are getting easy ..... Still it is not easy task for the 4 ladies to carry out their work during the stay of Haj .... Abbas Naqvi is not aware of the procedures and difficulties, since he has not yet performed Haj ...

What a blatant lie. Narendra Modi govt have nothing to do with this. Recently Saudi Arabia govt have removed Male guardian system in the country. Now any woman above 18 years age can travel to KSA or within the KSA without male guardian. BJP trying to take credit for other's work also???
