Rahul Gandhi elected Congress President

New Delhi, Dec 11 (AFP): Opposition Congress party named Rahul Gandhi as its new leader on Monday after years of speculation, calling it a "historic occasion".

Senior Congress leader Mullappally Ramachandran said the 47-year-old had stood unopposed for election as the president of the party his family had led for generations.

"I hereby declare Shri Rahul Gandhi elected as the President of the Indian National Congress," he told reporters outside the Congress headquarters in New Delhi. "This is a historic occasion."

The announcement caps years of speculation that the scion of the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty would take over from his 71-year-old mother Sonia who has led the party for nearly two decades.

Rahul, whose father, grandmother and great-grandfather all served as prime minister, has been her deputy since 2013 and led the campaign for the last general election.

He will officially take over on Saturday at a ceremony in New Delhi.

Congress party workers let off firecrackers and cheered as they celebrated the announcement.

"I have waited for this day for so many years. My joy knows no bounds," said Prem Chowdhury, a long-time party member and former municipal councillor.

Rahul was strongly criticised for a lacklustre campaign for the 2014 general election, in which Congress recorded its worst-ever showing and lost power to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party.

Since the national election defeat, the party has lost polls in many states to the BJP, exposing him to further criticism.

But few inside the party have been willing publicly to criticise the family that has been at its helm for generations.

It took 19 careful years of nurturing by the outgoing president to hand over the reins to the new president. Rahul was 28 years old when the current president took over. Add another 20 years and we are at 2037. Does it mean that the hereditary succession is made looking into the future? A party president who is more closer to the needs of the future and connect with the millennial? I know that is a tough ask from Pappu and for that matter any politician from any party.

At the end of the day, politicians are PR machine of the bureaucracy who are willing to stake their reputation for the cause directed by Babus and face ignominy when Babus flop all the while Babus keeping their jobs despite the failures. Rahul's appointment is symptomatic of our system where the actual executioners have a state of permanency and do not face the ballot. Therefore IT DOES NOT MATTER WHO THE PARTY PRESIDENT IS, as our system can chug off with all the evils and ills. Some people call it Democracy and that we happen to be world's largest democracy.

In a democracy we need a party which can deliver and give positive results. Has Modi's oratory provided employment to the millions of jobless youth and others ? Has Modi's oratory reduced prices of food and other essential items even with low crude oil prices ? Has it increased women's safety ? Has it brought black money back from Swiss banks, Panama etc. ? Has it stopped farmer suicides ? Has it brought social equality. Democracy is not about comparing who has better charisma or who is better at oratory, Modi or Rahul ? Democracy is not about creating fake illusions of the nation being advanced by fudging figures. Speeches given abroad alone do not raise the country's image. What raises it's image is when there is genuine all round economic development for all sections of society, education, health care, sanitation, safety, agriculture, employment etc. Performance with positive results is what matters at the end of the day. The old Congress have been punished by being voted out and reduced to just 44 LS MPs.

Rahul represents the new face of the Congress party. He is sincere and honest and will not stoop to lie just for people's votes. Getting completely rid and/or rectifying the khichad in the party which gave it a bad image will be among his first challenges in renovating and revitalizing the party. Already we see a new brand of leaders and spokespersons with sharp minds and sharper speaking. It will be tough for Rahul because no effort will be spared by the powers that be to continue to character assasinate him.

I am not a big fan of congress.
However i must state that the way Rahul has handled BJP in Gujrath, is going to be a big head ache for BJP in coming days/months and run upto 2019 general elections.

Look at insults thrown at him, besides all, our own prime minister didnt spare Rahul, so low people can stoop down to score a politcal point. I am sure he is the leader in the making and he will be a fine prime minister for this country.

I only wish he truly reflects Vajpayjee in his values and becomes a great leader like my beloved Vajpayeejee, rest of the leaders these days are so cheap that they have lost their moral grounds and for holding onto seat they can go to any extent like my own party BJP

I hope some good sense will prevail in BJP and we will get another crop of leaders like vajpayeji.

What development did u see which made bhakths like you to believe him so blindly? it's 4th year, India just getting backwards. Just announcing many more schemes and Abhiyans cant bring developments. BJP Should really work on it. It should affect common people in a better way. Modi just good with his tong. Being a PM of a country still busy backbiting (like some ladies in a neighbourhood) about Congress, Rahul etc.!!! Come on man...stop!! Modi should respect his own chair at least.
