Bad loans to banks by UPA a scam, bigger than 2G, CWG: Modi

New Delhi, Dec 13 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a scathing attack on the previous Congress-led UPA regime, saying that banks were pressured to give loans worth thousands of crores of rupees to select industrialists in a scam bigger than 2G, coal and Commonwealth Games scandals.

Speaking at the 90th AGM of industry association Ficci, Modi said the non performing asset (NPA) or bad loans problem is a 'liability' handed over by “economists” in the previous regime.

Hard-selling his government’s pro-poor policies, he listed out initiatives like free cooking gas connections to women, bank accounts to every household, loans to the youth and affordable housing, taken since 2014.

Modi said loans extended to select industrialists by pressuring banks were a loot of public money.

Calling it a “scam”, he said this was bigger than the Commonwealth Games, 2G telecom spectrum allocation and coal block allocation scams.

Modi said his government is formulating policies keeping in mind the need of businesses, abolishing archaic and obsolete laws.

Industry, he said, had been long demanding Goods and Services Tax (GST) and the BJP-led government implemented it and introduced measures like anti-profiteering to see that industry passes on the benefit of lower taxes to the people.

More than 30 crore poor have got bank accounts under the Jan Dhan Yojana, Modi said, adding that a study has found that inflation had come down in rural areas where such accounts have been opened.

He said 87 important reforms in sectors including in defence, financial sector and food processing have been taken up in the last three years.

The government has attempted to frame policies keeping in mind the aspirations and needs of the people, he said.

More than 3 crore women have been given free cooking gas LPG connection. After this, fuel inflation has dropped in rural areas, he said.

“We are trying to solve problems of poor after identifying their problems”, he said.

Under the Mudra scheme, over Rs 4 lakh crore guarantee- less loans have been given to about 9.75 lakh youth for business, leading to 3 crore new entrepreneurs being created since launch, he said.

PM Modi is 24X7 in election campaigning mode. Even after 3 and half years of rule he blames UPA for all his own government's failures. Half his popularity is real and half his popularity is an illusion created by his Modi/BJP friendly TV, print and social media. Know this that popularity and oratory do not ensure our savings are safe or create employment or help farmers issues etc. Sensible and wise decisions do which we have not seen from this BJP government. Corporates will be bailed out using our savings in the Banks. Is this a rumour ? No way and coming days and months we will have a lot more to fear if BJP wins Gujarat elections even by a margin of one vote. Common man will be crushed.

This fellow has nothing to show of development in his three and half years of rule. Always blaming the previous government for his failures. It does not fit to the august post of a PM of this great nation. Before 2014 election he had promised heaven to the nation, including putting behind bars the scamsters in the previous government. What happened to the promises? There is a saying in Kannada "bogallua nayi, yavagalu katchudila" . Mr. PM if you cannot govern, please quit. Enough of your bhashans.

BJP in in power and they got majority in parliament..... Just pass the rule that any loan defaulters are not paying within a year cease their property and put them inside. Why PM has to complain that it is a scam. When he cancelled the circulation of Notes without any notice than why can't he make a rule to punish them??????

    @Shan,
He is trying to protect the defaulters by keeping his hands crossed.
Banks have right to seize and auction assets of defaulters to recover the loans.
Lending money is a must in a healthy economy.
Pursuing defaulters vigorously is equally important without political and other interference in the matter.

Blaming UPA, British and others has become a way of life!!

Obviously the Ambanis and Adanis will be at the top of the list.
If the government does as you say, there will be a huge social and economic cost which will involve mass lay offs in all their businesses. Its like decriminalising murder to reduce the number of criminals in the society.
What we need is for the banks to start reducing their costs and actually have specialised units within the bank who exclusively deals with a particular task. No public sector bank does a stern background check on these co called big guns and the wise ones who decline giving loans to these big Gooons are transferred. There is an immense political pressures to these so called loans. We need lesser but important branches and ATMs should be outside the building just like how it is in the US. This will reduce a lot of cost.
Now the central govt is making the common citizens pay for their mistakes by introducing the FRDI Bill. Why should I be held responsible for your(NPAs) failure? The very bill if introduced will be a huge joke on democracy. This bill will prove that the Indian constituition is a useless piece of paper which is used according to the politicians will.
India too will become another America soon where you can no longer trust your relationship, climate and your finances.

The effects of your Demonisation and GST circus were worse than any bad loans if at all as you allege in history of India and cost india's exchequer in billions and it is in a irrecoverable state. If you don't understand economics and finances please don't hesitate to ask DR ManMohan Singh.
