Mangaluru, Jan 18: Chief whip of Legislative Assembly Ivan D’Souza said on Thursday, January 18 that he has urged chief minister Siddaramaiah to upgrade Christian Development Committee (CDC) to Christian Development Board and sanction a grant of Rs 500 crore for the welfare of the Christian community in the upcoming budget.

Addressing the media he said, “CM Siddaramaiah will present the state budget next month. On behalf of all Christians, I will request him to permit the upgrading of Christian Development Committee to Christian Development Board. We have requested the CM already and he has approved it. But we want an authorised declaration in the upcoming budget.

“The CDC headed by minister K J George falls under the Minority Development Board. As the minority department has to concentrate on other categories, there is always a delay in allocating funds to the Christian community. The CDC also depends on Minority Development Board’s staff which slows down the entire process of implementation of programmes. So a separate board for Christians will help solve all these issues.

"In 2017-18, the government sanctioned Rs 175 crore for Christians. The CDC distributed it to the community who form 4% of the population in the state for their requirements as self employment, subsidy on home loans, land, renovation of churches, cemeteries, construction of community halls, and aid for orphans. But there are many needy persons in the community and the CDC cannot cater to all of them with an amount of Rs 175 crore. So I request the government to increase the fund from Rs 175 crore to Rs 500 crore.

“As many as 176 students from the Christian community applied for educational scholarship last year. The CDC approved 158 students’ applications and Rs 31.60 crore was distributed to them with Rs 20 lac per head. In Dakshina Kannada we sanctioned Rs 30 crore for 17 churches, Rs 65.84 crore for 220 community centers, Rs 8.52 crore for old age homes and Rs 4.25 crore for cemeteries, he said.

The funds requested for/meant for the upliftment of the poorest of the poor among the target group (by means of providing educational facilities, job-oriented training, better sanitation & medical facilities, old age and widow pensions) (in this case, the Christian community) should, in case these funds/grants are sanctioned, be utilized for these purposes only, and not for any other purpose - certainly not for putting up buildings (except for the purpose of providing low-cost housing to the homeless or hostel facilities for the poor children).

In any case, we should all strive to uplift maximum number of poor people, irrespective of their caste or religious affiliation. Then only, will there real peace, happiness and harmony in society.

Except coast Karnataka, most of the Christians in Kanataka are below poverty line and BP card holders.

Recently I had visited Rangana hallee and met few Christians there too as I had accompanied a social worker.Surprised to see their living standard. Some old ladies are living on the govt. pension.

I could see lot of Christian Brothers in this forum not happy with helping only Christian poor. They want it for all. We should appreciate this.

This attitude is required in all communities. Poor is poor, whichever religion he belongs or whichever caste he belongs. When we see a poor we should help him to stand on his own without looking at his religion or caste.

We should oppose all politicians who divide people in the name of religion and caste for the sake of votes.

awesome comment . These politicians are smart and used to give all these biscuits to minorities and have them as their vote bank. Let's stop all these. I mean all of us. Let's not about religion any more. Yes, if Ivan urges for similar fund for poor sector, helping the needy sector , or some pro poor initiatives, then yes, we will support and encourage him. but calling out the religion name big here , he exposed his intension. So, let's all realize their dramas. Especially when election is nearing. thanks for positive comment and also to all who sensed it.

    Ivan,
Please stop asking for funds cause i am not sure where does it even go ..!!

Among the 4% catholic community 3.8% is good enough to manage . At-least give some money to Roshan Belman who is helping poor with houses .

Please use this money for all the people in hospitals who suffer irrespective of caste.

I think Christians are already well to do...
But poor Christians should get benefits...
And most important that money should not be spent of newly joined people in that community..

Ivan, very good move. We appreciate your boldness by pressing for separate board for Christian community.
If not mistaken, it was State BJP govt. under Yeddirappa, is the first one to sanction funds for Christian community and gave separate identity. Pressurising for separate board is very much required.

Ivan sir, let Govt money given to CDC to build community not to build walls to dead cemetries and repair buildings. If you empower people thy will build or repair buildings. It is a secular country. Let rules be framed to use the money for the empowermewnt of the people not dead buildings.
