Ajman: High level delegation from CAP visits Thumbay Labs’ Central Reference Laboratory

Ajman, Feb 6: The Central Reference Laboratory of Thumbay Labs at Gulf Medical University, Ajman, had the pleasure of hosting a high-level delegation of the prestigious College of American Pathologists (CAP) on February 4.

The delegates included Dr R Bruce Williams, president, College of American Pathologists, Chris Miller, vice-president International Market Development, Jim Orheim, senior director marketing and Dr Elizabeth Wagar , professor and chair, department of Laboratory Medicine at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center.



The delegation met Dr Thumbay Moideen, founder president of Thumbay Group and Dr P K Menon, medical director and chief operating officer (COO) of Thumbay Labs, to discuss educational opportunities for enhancing lab quality, as well as training and internship opportunities at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, for students from Gulf Medical University (GMU).

Touring the central reference lab, the CAP officials visited the state-of-the-art facilities for Neonatal Screening, Next Generation Sequencing and Genomics. The visitors were impressed with the technology and operational standards at Thumbay Labs. They also admired the strategic vision and future directions of Thumbay Labs.

Commenting on the significance of the visit, Dr P K Menon said, “The visit of this high-profile delegation from CAP is significant for us, as it demonstrates the capability of Thumbay Labs to carry out high definition genomics to help enhance the level of patient-care in the region. Further, the training opportunities from CAP are exceptional in quality, and will go a long way in enhancing the quality of precision medicine, delivered by our advanced facilities.”

“Thumbay Labs has plans to further expand to new locations in the Middle East, Africa and India. According to the strategic plans of Thumbay Group, we hope to have 25 diagnostic labs worldwide by 2022, making Thumbay Labs the biggest chain of private diagnostics lab in the region,” said Dr Thumbay Moideen, explaining the expansion plans. He added that this would complement the group’s healthcare division’s expansion plans which will see the Thumbay academic hospital network have a total of 1000 beds in the UAE, 1500 beds in India and 750 beds elsewhere in the Gulf and Africa by 2022.
