Puttur: Illegal sand extraction - panchayat member among five arrested

Puttur, Mar 14: The police have arrested five persons including a gram panchayat member, in connection with the alleged illegal sand extraction. They have also confiscated two tipper trucks involved with the activity.

Nawaz Hussain from Ajilamogaru Maninalkur, Ashraf from Kudugudde, Barya, Abdul Majeed from Kannur, Rajesh from Kanapade in Navoor village and Addu alias Adam from Kalleri Storehouse, who happens to a member of Tannirpantha gram panchayat, stand arrested in this case.

The accused were extracting sand from Netravati river at Bambila in Barya village, when the police raided the spot. The raid was conducted under the directions of district superintendent of police, Dr Ravikanthe Gowda, and additional superintendent of police, Sajith, and supervision of district crime intelligence bureau and Puttur rural police circle inspector, Gopal Naik. A team led by Uppinangady police sub-inspector, Nandakumar, conducted the raid.
