EC should revert to use of paper ballot over EVMs: Congress

New Delhi, Mar 17 (IANS): Citing apprehensions on the misuse of the electronic voting machine (EVMs), the Congress on Saturday said that the Election Commission should revert to the old practice of paper ballot and slammed BJP's move for simultaneous elections.

The political resolution, adopted at the party's plenary here, underscored the need for ensuring free and fair elections to retain people's faith in the integrity of the electoral system.

"The EC has the constitutional mandate to ensure free and fair elections. Both the voting and counting process must remain transparent to retain people's faith in the integrity of the electoral system," the resolution said.

"There are apprehensions among the Political Parties and the people over the misuse of EVMs to manipulate the outcome contrary to the popular verdict.

"To ensure the credibility of the electoral process, the Election Commission should revert to the old practice of paper ballot, as most major democracies have done," it said.

The Congress also said that the idea of simultaneous election is imcompatible with the Constitution and is impractical and misplaced.

"The BJP's move for simultaneous elections is misplaced. It is incompatible with the Constitution and is also impractical. It will have serious implications, which must be thoroughly enquired into, and a national consensus built," the party added.

The Election Commissioners in India can be compared to Ostritch who have buried their heads in the sand. Inspite of grave doubts over many elecetions in recent past, the election Commissioners have sweet nothing to allay the apprehensions in the minds of the Indian public that EVM's are not reliable and can be tampered with.

Please revert to use of Ballot Papers to restore confidence in the democratic process.

This is the policy of our congress system, they never think or valuate their fault ,mistakes, wrongs,or poor performance always thinks they are right , that being the reason they reached present condition.
Have they declared election result is not genuine or put any doubt about winning of recent by-election in UP or Punjab assembly Election results? No.
If it lost then put blame on EVM, if gained then full marks to EVM.
Try to move to progress not to stone age!!

With paper ballots it will be easier for Congress to rig election. That is why they are eager to go back to paper ballots. Violence and booth capturing will be rampant.

Certainly the proper and right way of voting. Using EVMs made our lives miserable and BJP came on power. When we choose our candidate, we have no way to know that we have done it correctly. There is a person who just sits next to the voting booth and does his choice.

Its high time that the paper ballets are used.

    Mr.Jossey Saldanha, Mumbai
Sir, Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) is only useful if the EVM and Printed sheets are counted and tallied in every booth.
In the past ballot boxes are opened in front of all party representatives. But in the case of VVPAT is counted in closed doors.
Secondly ECI is yet to clarify about the microchips installed in each of this machine which are imported from USA from a companies established by Indians. The company itself facing charges in US court.
No electronic data in the world is secure even master/credit cards with end to end encryption. But ECI has fond of this machine which western countries have dumped in scrap and went back to older system.
Even the voters push the button of his choice he is uncertain that the receipt dropped in the VVPAT is exactly the one he pressed for.
In recently held Gujarat election Election officer himself admitted that some booth EVM and VVPAT is not tallying.
In Tripura CPI(M) and BJP has got equal percentage of votes. But at the end BJP got more seat than CPI(M). This itself is evidence that there is intelligent programmed inserted in this chips which can manipulate the voters trend as and when required.
Opposition winning all Bye polls and BJP snatching the big assembly elections is deliberate plan from BJP to make feel India EVM are not only working for the party.
How BJP which secured all the assembly elections can't retain prestigious Gorakhpur is evidence. Lok Sabha elections are due in less than year. The BJP don't have to worry lot The assembly election which they secured no elections in next five years.
