Kundapur: Court finds murder-accused guilty - sentencing on March 26

Kundapur, Mar 21: The additional district and sessions court here has concluded that Azhar Afzal Khan alias Ajai Babu (42) from Mumbai, who had been accused of murdering Lalita Devadiga from Gangolli in the taluk, is guilty of this crime.

Lalita had been murdered in a well-known lodge in the town thee years ago. Judge of the court, Prakash M Khanderi, said that the quantum of punishment would be announced on March 26.

Azhar alias Ajai, who hails from Gujarat, was working at a garments factory in Mumbai when he came to know Vaishnavi (33), daughter of Lalita Devadiga from Gangolli. The two loved each other. After some time, Azhar got job elsewhere after which Vaishnavi married a man from Maharashtra. Some years later, Azhar came back and asked Vishnavi to marry him but she said she could not do anything without her mother's consent.

Azhar came here on April 4, 2015, rented a room at a lodge and asked Lalita Devadiga to come to the lodge. When he sought her permission to marry her daughter, she refused. Angered by this rejection, he smothered her to death and escaped with gold ornaments she was wearing.

The police arrested the accused when he was on his way from Mumbai to Ahmedabad. Azhar had confessed to his crime and returned the stolen ornaments.
