Bengaluru: Actress Chaitra accuses husband of physical torture, files complaint

Daijiworld Media Network - Bengaluru (SP)

Bengaluru, Mar 21: Actress Chaitra has filed a complaint in Basavanagudi women's police station in the city against her husband, Potaraj, accusing him of inflicting physical torture on her and curtailing her freedom.

Chaitra has acted in a few films including Kannada movie, 'Khushi'. After falling in love with Potaraj, who had introduced himself as a businessman dealing in liquor and real estate after meeting her in a party, she had married him on December 15, 2006.The couple has two children.

In the said complaint, Chaitra says that she had deserted her husband and presently living with her parents on account of family disputes. Personnel of Basavanagudi women's police station, who have registered criminal case of physical torture and family atrocity against Potaraj, are learnt to be taking measures to arrest him.

In the complaint, Chitra says that she had married Potaraj in Chamundeshwari Studio at Mysuru in 2006. "After our marriage, my husband used to routinely beat me up and hurl abuses at me. I also was meted out harassment for even minor things. This problem continued till I delivered the second child after which I have not been having physical relationship with my husband. He used to send gunman with me whenever I wanted to go out including my visits to parental home. Even when I sought money to meet household expenses, he behaved with me inhumanly," she explained.

Chaitra says that her husband had imposed the condition that she should not act in films after marriage. Hence, she narrated, she stopped acting and produced television series with the assistance of her people in her parental home, duly claiming that profit from this activity was also collected by her husband. "He continued to quarrel for even petty things and attack me. When we were travelling together in a car, there was a fight between us, when he hit my head against the window of the car, as a result of which my skull was injured for which I was treated in a hospital," she has narrated.

The actor said that blood began to ooze out of her mouth and nose after her husband held her by her hair and banged her against the wall in connection with a small dispute on March 14, 2018. Her left eye was also injured. She said that with the specific purpose of murdering her, he had held by her neck tightly and hit her in her abdomen region. "I fell unconscious but he left home without trying to even provide me treatment," she stated.

Chaitra has accused her husband of having relationship with a girl named Amoolya and that he wants to get rid of her by inflicting mental and physical abuse because of this relationship. She says that currently she lives in her parental home, and has urged the police to take action against Potaraj.

The police, who registered criminal case, went to take Potaraj into custody but they could not do so as he had locked the house, went away, and switched off his cellphone, it is learnt.

I was laughing at the system that when some one wants marry as per old traditions some people follow Jataka rule of matrimony( Stars, Guna(habits) and match and it its fit than only they allow them to marry. Now I am married and I feel this system what our elders followed is correct. Nowadays Boy and girl see each other and only see outer beauty or money and marry and they will fight each other full life for pity things. Do you think their marriage will last for ever?????

Potaraj. ..A person with a comedy name. .His face could be looking like potatoes. .ok. ...what ever it may be. ..I came to read lot of comments are in favour of his wife. Ladies and gentlemen , by majority all support female side.I never against that actor and I have no any prejudice over anybody.
I have some doubts over that film actor , any commentators can reply. 1 There could be a chance of fabricating the whole scene. 2.The whole story attracts 498A of IPC. 3.She complaints that her husband and she had fights to stop acting in films. Any possessive husband won't tolerate his wife in someone's arm . 4 Money issue. ..The important role of money in family life. .but the worst adverse effects in family life. 5. Is anybody know about their bed room stories ? 6 Can anybody by rule out a third person's involvement in their marital life? ..I think it's better not to show any emotional statement because we don't know 100 percent truth. Without knowing the truth ,if we react for a half cooked/ fabricated story , it's not perfect .Think once again my dear all..

There must be some thing fishy Police should investigate the matter in various angles. Socially and our law give more Priority to women. If some thing goes wrong within family then always man will treated as guilty. Its like Motor vehicle act if a small vehicle hits to a big vehicle then the only big vehicle considered as accused one. This system to be revoked.

Whatever the reason, a husband assaulting his wife is never acceptable. For the woman, that should be the last straw on a camel's back. She should either tell her brothers to retaliate, also police complaint and if one has money go to a bouncer and teach such a "ganda naali ka keeda" a proper lesson that woman is not a property to deal with any way he wants.

No two opinions about it.................A man who raises his hands against a woman is a coward and a misfit in society. In case you cannot get along with your partner, you can always separate and part ways, but beating up your wife..............That makes you the worst specimen amongst humankind. Shame on you Potaraj............You are disgusting and despicable and I hope you will be punished suitably so that you never get to raise your hands against another woman in your lifetime.

Marital fights are on the rise. Women suffers usually in a troubled marriage. I feel most problems in marriage are simple issues. Physical violence is no answer to the problem Instead we must look deeper into the problem and solve it through dialogues. Unless urgent action is taken against this we must soon suffer. Its sad that such things are happening in marriages. I understand the pain that the couple underwent. Divorce is very easy but all costs we must try to avoid a separation. Becuase separation is no solution for troubled marriage. A couple can be taught to solve their problems through dialogue and live a happy life. Instead if we resort to violence and try for divorce we are actually spoiling our relationship. Its common when two people live together to have problems. Instead of jumping for separation and divorce we must sit down think and try to solve the issues. Jumping to fight and for separation is not the solution at all. I feel all marital problems can eb solved through dialogue and discussion. And time is the best healer. Hope all problems get solved .

@Pedda gunda mangalore, she has already given off her acting and at home with children.Only she does some production of series. However it shouldnt be the cause and treat wife to maltreat. She is not a cow,or working woman to cleaning his house. Both should understand each other and workout for their children to raise and give good example.otherwise tomorrow their children too will follow the same way.I dont understand why she had not complained to police before as she had wounds and in hospital but now?It was a love marraige .where went wrong.?Always the wives suffer and children too.when seperated, then children have no one right hand to hold fest when trouble arises. They will suffer most .Hope their divorce will proceed without much dirty clothes washing in public stones. What does he say ?allow him to come to word.sometimes men think they have a right to beat the wife.

    Dear Peddu Gundanna,

I do not know the full truth in this particular case of Chaitra & Potaraj and hence I will refrain from making any comment on the case. More importantly, it is their personal life matter and hence it is not my business to stand in judgement.

However, the reality is that the curse of physical and sexual abuse by husbands on their wives does happen in 1000’s of households today and it USED TO HAPPEN even 50 years back. So please do not tell me that everything was hunky dory in the past. The main difference is that 50 years back women would simply suffer in silence and had no forum to stand up against such abuses.

So please stop expecting that women should simply accept these abuses without airing their grievances at the legally permissible forum. If this is too much to fathom, then please put yourself in the shoe of a physically / sexually abused wife for one day and then tell me if you are prepared to endure the same for the rest of your life?

Why keep quiet when physical torture has been inflicted on anyone. Ladies have to wake up & should not think about Prestige and Pride during such torture, you have every right to complain to get him arrested.
It has become a common practice of criminals who can only harm soft targets like wife, females.

There may be several reasons other than those stated here. Not all the time can one trust the other - be it a husband or a wife. There are always ups and downs in life - the only way one can patch up and stay together is called maturity. That is the very essence of our birth and being sent down by God Almighty on this planet to be something within this short span of our existence.
