Opinion: Kathua, Unnao rape cases - India's hour of shame

By Chris Emmanuel D'Souza

Apr 16: A story was narrated while we were growing up about an owner and his pet dog. The owner of a farm house had regular tussles with almost every neighbour around his village. Some of them used to hop into his yard and steal coconuts, areca and pluck fruits. The owner was by nature a vengeful man, he was enraged at this and wanted to get rid of these people. So, he decided to tame a dog and make it a beast. He fed him bones, beat and tortured him every day to develop a wild behavior. In a few months it did, and now the dog had grown into a beast. It first attacked cats and chickens and chased stray dogs that didn’t bite back. Now the fury of this dog had spread across the neighbourhood, and no one would take a chance. The owner then started unleashing the dog at night, to watch out for the intruders. His daughter had a sleep-walking disorder, to which the owner didn’t bother to pay too much attention. And one fateful night, his daughter sleepwalked out of the house into the yard and the bloodthirsty dog pounced on her and ruthlessly attacked her leaving the girl with serious injuries. The moral: The disconnection between owner’s intentions and the dog’s actions.

The situation is pretty much similar in the country. The seeds of hate and indoctrination that RSS carried out for ages, have ripened. The Sangh Parivar high command dictates to the entire nation, on the kind of food to eat, clothes to wear, the chants to scream and wants the nation to worship goddesses. But privately, RSS tells its gang members to beat, rape, torture and kill women and children at the premises of the temple. The organization has spider-wrapped the entire country’s ‘mindset’ in its web. The horrific atrocities in Unnao and Kathua are the result of rigorous poisoning of Sangh Parivar and the BJP through top TV news channels and through Facebook and WhatsApp.

The Unnao rape case came into limelight after a 16-year-old girl attempted suicide outside the residence of wrathful and controversial Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath. Her father was thrashed by BJP lawmaker Kuldeep Sengars brother Atul Singh. Her father later succumbed to injuries. But the background of this episode dates back to June 2017. Then, this same minor girl had accused BJP MLA Kuldeep Sengar and his brother of raping her. For the next ten months the family sought hard justice. The cops refused to file an FIR. On Sunday, MLA and his brothers filed a complaint with the Unnao police on girl’s family members. The police acted on the MLAs complain, they put girl’s father behind bars. Later the cops along with MLAs brothers brutally thrashed the girl’s elderly father to death in custody. The Yogi Adityanath’s government initially covered up the crime by threatening police officers, civil bodies and journalists. Yogi Adityanath himself has absolved of all his previous crimes, after being installed as the chief minister of the state.

The accused MLA Kuldeep Sengar blatantly denied allegation of rape and blamed it on the girl’s family members and the opposition party. He openly elevated himself to the status of the Lord ‘that even Bhagavan Ram was accused of rape!', thus putting end to all allegations and questions on him. But the progressive media (the one which tells truth) along with some rights group pressurized the central government to arrest the rapist. At the movement, CBI has booked a case on Kuldeep Sengar.

The Kathua rape case is even more troubling to all humanity and makes us bow our heads in shame as Indians. This crime will remain as a dent for many many years to come, no matter in what direction the nation moves. Kathua is a small village in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. Here an 8-year-old girl child was abducted from her village, drugged, then raped by eight men, and stoned to death and raped again and finally burnt and thrown in the fields. While carrying on this act, the rapists stood chanting and singing ‘Bharath Mata Ki’, and all happened in the premises of a Devasthan, a temple. The crime took place in January 2018. All the eight men were arrested and charged of rape. But, everything was hidden. The Hindutva groups and lawyers with support from local BJP policies took to streets with violent protests demanding the release of the eight men arrested. The ruling BJP govt both in Jammu and in the center put tremendous pressure on Kathua police to cover up the case and destroy evidence.

Despite the efforts from the government of India to block the case and deviate the country’s attention, the horrendous cruelty associated with the crime was brought to nation's attention, largely with the help of a few brave souls. Ramesh Kumar Jalla, SSP, crime branch, Jammu and Kashmir, a man with immaculate track record in his career, headed the investigating team. The charge sheet was completed in record time, ten days before the deadline. Officer Jalla refused to come under the pressure and carried out an intense probe with arresting each suspect, day after day. The entire story of how the little girl was abducted, taken and confined in a temple, raped repeatedly, burnt and tortured and finally killed has come out through the investigation that has remained firm through the tense weeks and months in J & K. Four cops who were involved in siding with the criminals have also been arrested.

Deepika Singh Rajawat, the lawyer, who was the first to fight for the little girl's justice was getting threats to her life and was forced to drop the case. But she continued her fight. Rahul Pandita, writer and journalist has been posting facts of this case on social media platforms from day 1 of this horrifying atrocity and the way the BJP government put pressure on cops, court and media to shut the case.

On both these atrocities on minor girls, the man who initiated the #BetiBachao# campaign in his loud and fiery speeches, the man himself, Prime Minister Narendra Modi kept a numb silence for days. The man who doesn’t spare a minute tweeting about his achievements and congratulating celebrities, did not bother to write a line of shock, condemnation or even condolence in his twitter page, made up of 40 million (4 crore) followers (although 60 percent of them being fake and rest belong to BJP IT cell, Bengaluru). After a week, the man, who claims to have sacrificed everything to this nation, finally decided to come out public and address the horror that has put himself and his men in shame, in his usual style of melodrama, forged emotions and falsehood. The Prime Minister bashed the Congress party leaders from Jawaharlal Nehru to Rahul Gandhi. He wowed to take strict action on all those involved in the crimes and thus closed the debate, washed his hands off the dirt. The cheerleading media was satisfied.

We all need to look in the mirror, and introspect, as all this is happening, and the day doesn’t pass by without a terrible act of brutality taking place in the country. Who is to be blamed after all? Well, there is a personality known as Arnab Goswami, the self-claimed ‘Savior’, Patriot and firebrand TV show host, who for years, posed the question before the country ‘Nation wants to know'. Last week, in his Republic TV debate, Arnab blamed both Kathua and Unnau rape cases on the Congress party and Rahul Gandhi and also whispered that Modi-Shah need to wake up. Wake up on what? Arnab Goswami has played a pivotal role in creating this reactionary and violent mindset among younger generation India. Over 50 percent of India’s population is under the age of 25. His news hour programme has been most watched in the country, and it is largely made up by screaming and smearing opposite opinions, while pushing RSS-BJP agenda to the forefront. India tops the United Nations and Amnesty International list for violence and intolerance towards women, lower castes and minorities, and in days' time will sink deeper, and Arnab Goswami is an architect of this downfall.

On both Kathua and Unnao rape cases, BJP leaders are involved, in acts and in support. The government has tried everything under the sun to stay silent and wipe out the cases, without a trace. Most of the women ministers like Smriti Irani (who rampaged on previous UPA government on safety of women) has not uttered a word, so also Nirmala Sitaraman, and senior leader Sushma Swaraj, the lady greatly known for her tearful speech in the cabinet five years ago on Nirbhaya case, has decided to look the other way. The great god-men of the country, have chosen to remain silent, and some of them have already sided with the rapists.

Who says rapes and crimes never took place before? But, today there seems to be a difference; the crimes are carried out with pride and the criminals have the confidence that the ruling party is in their side. Although, in a democracy everyone has the right to choose a political party, these two incidents should shake some of its hardline supporters. Can anyone touch their hearts and claim they still want this party to be in power? NDTV journalist Ravish Kumar made some chilling points in his monologue, he stated, "there is no reason to be angered, think for a while with a cool head, I have been saying this for some time, people ridicule me for this, but I will continue to say it, there is a violent mob that is being constructed outside your gates, and it is coming at you, your sons will be part of it too, be ready, today it is them, tomorrow it could be me, beware".

What is the best solution to get rid off such crimes, death sentence is not the remedy. Such punishment has to be given to the criminal so that it becomes a lesson for other criminals. It should make them think twice before doing any crime. After all all these leaders are servants of the public. So we have more right than them.

I do hope that all those who actively or passively support kathua rapists, do not get a girl to marry, for themselves and for the sons in the family. I hope, that the existing girls in their family, refuse to acknowledge their existence. They need time and situation to reflect their present state of mind.

Kathua raope accused pleaded not guilty and asked for narco analysis.
I believe strongly that the accused are just implicated in this case!
Actual culprits should be identified, tried and hanged to death.

    Ivar,
you have only heard and we all (Indians) have realized what is happening in India.
Never compromise or compare the historical events to the present disaster taking place in our country. Are you not proud of our countries leder ?
What we need is rewriting few of our countries constitutional laws. Especially on rape & murder of teens or kids. Please do not go by arguements, rather cryout and show sympathy on the victims.

Now that this writer had given his verdict, we don't need any enquiries! I request everyone yo reds the chargesheet of Kthua case. In first chargesheet, it is no where mentioned that she got raped! Please read it. And why this news didn't came to light till 4 months? Proper enquiry should be done on this case. Hang the culprits publically but please don't drag Hinduism to this. We are the only race which gave god position to women. Don't leave the culprits if anyone involved. Execute them publically.

'give bjp rss modi a chance'. This was the rant my multi cultured friends told me. I voiced my doubt saying there is a hidden agenda, so don't want to give a chance. But look at our nation, what a damage a 'chance' has done. Even today, the same set says, but he works 24 hours, he is progressive, great orator, big leader.
If the followers define the leader, then...
