'Ending all ties with BJP': Yashwant Sinha quits party, says democracy under threat today

Patna, Apr 21 (Agencies): BJP dissident Yashwant Sinha, who has not left any stone unturned in criticising the BJP-led central government has quit from the party.

"Today I am taking 'sanyas' (retirement) from any kind of party politics, today I am ending all ties with the BJP," Yashwant Sinha announced during a meeting of his organisation Rashtra Manch in Patna on Saturday afternoon.

The meeting also saw leaders of the Congress, Lalu Yadav's Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) in attendance.

What grabbed all eye-balls was the presence of BJP MP Shatrughan Sinha.

A bitter critic of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Sinha said that he would launch a strong movement to "save democracy" in the country.

"My heart still beats for this country, and I will not sit tight while there is crisis." said Sinha. "Democracy is under threat today."

Yashwant Sinha has also blamed the government for the Parliament logjam.

"Why did Prime Minister Narendra Modi not intervene and speak to opposition leaders to ensure that the house functions properly?" he demanded.

"Centre was happy that the house was not functioning as no confidence motions was being moved by opposition every day," Yashwant Sinha said. "Speaker Sumitra Mahajan also said that because of the chaos in Parliament, she could not count 50 members who moved no confidence motion. She made a mockery of democracy."

80-year-old BJP veteran, Yashwant Sinha had held the Finance and External Affairs portfolios in Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's cabinet between 1998 and 2004.

In 2014, after Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led BJP came to power with a thumping majority, Yashwant Sinha was marginalised along with senior leaders including LK Advani, seen as punishment for opposing Modi being named their party's presumptive Prime Minister.

Yashwant Sinha's son, Jayant Sinha, is a minister in Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government.

In February, Yashwant Sinha had claimed that he would not leave the BJP but the party could throw him out if it so wanted because of his criticisms. He had also accused the Modi-government of not fulfilling the promises it had made ahead of the 2014 general elections.

"Why shall I leave BJP? What this party means to me, (it) possibly does not mean to anyone (else). I have given my blood and sweat for this party. From 2004 to 2014, we were fighting against the then ruling party (Congress)," Sinha had said.

Karnataka chief minister took a dig at BJP saying all honest senior leaders were quitting the BJP, except 'former jail birds', in an apparent reference to BJP's chief ministerial candidate B S Yeddyurappa.

"Shri @YashwantSinha has decided to take political ‘sanyas.’ I wish him health & fulfilment. It seems in BJP all honest senior leaders above 75 are being forced to take sanyas; except those who have the qualification of being former #JailBirds," he tweeted.

At 80 plus what choice he had other than resigning. It is 4 years since Modi govt came to power. He went on criticising the govt becoz he did not get F M post. Now he is realising at ripe old age that democracy is in danger. good riddance. Unlike congress the Central govt did not buckle under pressure to accommodate him. Once he came to know his relevance is lost he resigned. Question is whtehr it really makes any difference except for a few selected frustrated elements. The same people who once critisied Advani are praising him today becoz Advani is unhappy with Modi. So enemy's enemy is my friend. It is clear

As a Finance Minister Mr Yashwant Sinha is far better than lawyer turned finance minister with zero experience Arun Jaitley who represent Union Carbide in Bhopal gas tragedy which took more than 5000 peoples death.

Now his son serving as junior minister PM Modi government it can be hardly digested that his connections with BJP has come to an end.

But atleast India under his tenure not suffered policies like 'Demonetisation', 'GST', Inflation, taxation and so on

Congress must be blackmailing him to attend all functions and give some statements against BJP...he is still on remote control.... sad but true... On the Contrary... Pranab Mukherji is not into much politics these days & is maintaining his reputation...

Yeshwant Sinha is not the original BJP leader, he migrated from Janatha Parivar. V.P.Singh appointed him Minister of state in his cabinet, but Sinha refuse to take oath because he wanted Cabinet Minister. Later he left Janatha Dal & joined Samajavadi Janatha party & become Finance minister in Chandrashekhar cabinet. In 1993 he left SJP & joined BJP.

I completely agree with your words . Yashwant sinha not BJPian and he migrated from Janata Parivar.

Today He proved himself that by quitting BJP after this much ignorance. Also he proved from his statements against BJP government.

At least he has guts to speak against BJP in Modi rule only because he is migrated from janata parivar.

Now a days just see that no one have guts to speak against modi and his government after lots of ignorance by BJP . Strong Example is L K Advani.

O dear reader please don’t praise him and Shatrughan and even for Togodia once they lose their power they will do the same thing wherever they go like party hoppers whenever a person doesn’t get ticket they will jump to another party, these people are very dangerous to society because they will turn 360 degrees every time they change.
