Rail services suspended after protests in Anantnag

Srinagar, May 25 (IANS): Rail services between Baramulla and Bannihal towns in Jammu and Kashmir were suspended on Friday after protests erupted in Anantnag district over the arrests of young men by security forces.

Authorities suspended the rail services between north Kashmir's Baramulla town and Bannihal in Jammu region following the protests in Arwani area.

Railway officials said the services would operate normally between Baramulla and Srinagar city while these would remain suspended as a precaution between Bannihal and Baramulla town for the day.

Protests erupted in Arwani after the nocturnal arrests of some youths there.

Police said some youths were picked for questioning in connection with two militancy related incidents in which a special police officer (SPO) was killed and 10 people were injured.

One May 15, a SPO was killed and a Head Constable was injured when militants fired at a police vehicle in Bijbehara.

On May 23, 10 people were injured when militants hurled a grenade at a security vehicle.
