Harassed interfaith couple get passports after Sushma Swaraj intervenes

Lucknow, Jun 22 (IANS): A Hindu woman married to a Muslim got her passport on Thursday, following External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj's intervention, barely 24 hours after a passport officer rejected her application on the grounds that she had not changed her surname.

Regional Passport Official Piyush Verma on Thursday gave the passport to Tanvi Sethi while the passport of her husband Mohammad Anas Siddiqui was renewed and also handed over.

Sethi alleged misbehaviour by passport officer Vikas Mishra on Wednesday when she had gone to the passport office here. She said her passport application was rejected on the grounds that she had not changed her surname even after 12 years of marriage to a Muslim man.

She later tweeted to the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) and Sushma Swaraj with her complaint. Both responded to her plea.

Passport officer Mishra has since been transferred to Gorakhpur and an explanation has been sought from him, an official told IANS.

Sethi and her husband said they were very happy at the alacrity with which the PMO and the MEA responded.

The officer accused of misbehaviour, however, denied the charges and said he had only told Sethi of the rules laid down in such cases.

Senior officials said that old rules mandated that a marriage certificate be produced in cases of inter-religious marriages during the passport application procedure, though adding that the officer was not right in ill-treating the woman and shouting at her.

If the marriage is solemnised as per Islamic rituals, i.e. a nikahnama was drawn, instead of marriage under Special Marriage Act, Tanvi would have to convert to Islam. This would mean two things:
1.This ceases to be inter-faith marriage.
    2. It raises the question on whether she changed her name to Shadia Anas as per her nikahnama?

Probably the Officer might have asked few questions suspecting a foul play. We have read a lot of news of people travelling to Syria and other travel banned countries. I hope this is a genuine case.

As I said, hatred is like a disease, it need to be treated firmly, else influenced persons like Mishra are seen over and again in public domain with fearless approach. Now we can Rss has come forward and openly defend his position.
Some evil forces with political agenda are actively indulging in hate campaign openly in public and aswell as through social media and running news channels that are either paid or owned by political leaders whose sole job is to debate Hindu Muslim, national antinational, India Pakistan and derail the public discourse from issues and logic into polarising emotions. We all know exactly which ones, and we all even know the debaters who’re being rewarded for spewing the vilest propaganda.

Its a classic case of bias, nothing else. If the officer is not aware of new rules, he should be educated in a proper way.

Actually Govt is desirous to issue passport at a lightening speed. But officials are snails. In this case Sushma Swaraj might have ordered it be issued immediately.

It was not nice on Passport Officer to put his views regarding surname change. But Tanvi Seth might not have changed her surname to put her husband in TEST case .... Ha... Ha... Ha...
