Bahrain praises Indian community's role in its development

New Delhi, Jul 15 (IANS): Bahrain Foreign Minister Shaikh Khalid bin Ahmed Al Khalifa on Sunday lauded the role of the Indian expatriate community's role in his country's development.

"FM Shaikh Khalifa praised the contribution of Indian community settled in Bahrain towards the economic development of Bahrain," External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Raveesh Kumar tweeted following the second High Joint Commission meeting led by External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and Shaikh Khalifa in Manama.

Bahrain is home to around 350,000 Indian nationals, the largest expatriate community in the Gulf Kingdom, and more than 3,000 Indian-owned or joint venture companies.

Bilateral trade between India and Bahrain stood at over $875 million as of February this year, according to figures provided by the External Affairs Ministry.

India's total capital investment into Bahrain between January 2003 and March 2018 has been estimated at $1.69 billion.

On Saturday, the first day of her two-day visit to Bahrain, Sushma Swaraj, along with Shaikh Khalifa, inaugurated the new Indian Embassy complex in Manama.

"The new developments that have taken place in the economic field in the two countries, will take economic relations to greater heights," Sushma Swaraj said in her address at the ceremony.

India's relations with Bahrain is an ancient history, in a way, because Indian merchants have been in Bahrain as Merchants and Traders while the British came to Bahrain as Protectorates of the entire Persian Gulf region. The honesty and integrity of each and every Indian in Bahrain added with hard work has been the hallmark of each and every Indian who came to Bahrain for business or employment.

We landed in Bahrain as "small people" more than sixty one years ago, when Bahrain itself was a small Sheikhdom under the leadership of late Shaikh Sulman. We have always remained grateful to Bahrain for all the kind hospitalities that we enjoyed, and we are proud that we never diminished our hard work and honest work in whichever way possible so that our superiors were happy, and so also all the other multi-cultural and multi-national expatriates that we associated with.

We have some of the fondest memories attached to our life and dedication in Bahrain. We have witnessed Bahrain grow and prosper in so many ways, and we witnessed the people of Bahrain always kind hearted, helpful and hospitable in every step of the way.

Thank you, Bahrain, for all that you have given us in return to all that we gave you willingly and happily. It was certainly a "win win" situation for everyone, and God has always been kind and merciful to all of us.
