Kannur Airport to begin operations in Nov as first trial passenger flight lands

Daijiworld Media Network - Kannur

Kannur, Sep 21: The Kannur Airport will soon start its operations as Air India has successfully landed its test flight there on Thursday, September 20.

The landing was necessary to clear the way for flight operations to start at the fourth airport in Kerala.

Based on the report submitted by the aviation ministry, licence will be issued to the airport and it will be operational by November first week.

The test was conducted by the aviation ministry. The Air India flight took-off from Thiruvananthapuram at 9.45 am and landed at Kannur at 11.38 am. After the Boeing 747, the aero bridge and other facilities for passengers were also tested.

The airport is expected to serve more than one million passengers annually and authorities estimate the number will increase five-fold by 2025.

Built at a cost of Rs 2,292 crore and spread over 2,300 acres, the airport has a runway suitable for Code E aircraft, like the Boeing B-777 and Airbus A-330. It will be extended later for the operation of Code F aircraft, like Airbus A-380. The integrated 95,000 sq meters terminal building, the eighth largest in India, has been built with state-of-the-art facilities.

The airport will benefit residents of the state working in Middle East and tourist destination Kodagu and Mysuru in Karnataka, as well as Kerala’s hilly districts like Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasargod will also benefit.

Studied in Karnataka for 6 years. 4 years in Mangalore. Has a lot of tuluva friends, never heard any kind of hatred comments from them or any person I had met during my time in Mangalore. And here I find people who shows hatred towards Keralites which includes me. So sad. I wonder when the date would be that we all see ourselves as one. Fact is I am an Indian outside India, and a mallu inside India. Very sad to see the above remarks from educated people of Mangalore.

Presence of kannur airport is a good thing. First, it will reduce passenger to that tiny crampy mangalore airport..and second, Emirates is highly likely to start flying there, so the airport would be the closest one to mangalore where emirates flies (if you can put up with the malbaris that is)

Four International airport in the tiny West coast state of India is the great achievement for the 'God's own country'. Congratulation for all Keralities around the world.

Kannur Airport certainly proved that 'Kerala Model' is realistic than virtual 'Gujarat Model'.

If the fare are better than Mangalore and service are better and convenience I don't mind flying this airport in the future rather than waiting in long ques for one hand baggage in Mangalore airport and harassment of strip search for home bound passengers.

Why do you mock your own city Mangaluru?? Mangalore is far more developed than any kerala cities. Mangalore is most favourite place for keralites...Just an airport wont matter much...It's state government fault or failure to provide land for extension of runway.....Unfortunately coastal karnataka is one of the most neglected place by karanataka...

Sir, I don't get the service in Mangalore for what I pay. For your knowledge every passenger was charged 'Airport Development' fees included in the ticket fare which is more than the base cost.

Perhaps Mangalore is the only Airport in the world for one aircraft landing passengers have to wait one hour for baggage and most cases baggage found torn. This is the only airport senior customer officer saying I have to pay duty for used clothes.

I had never seen any officer working in this airport smiling. This is only airport in the world home bound passenger with zero luggage pay scanned and x-ray.

I had traveled around the world. When it comes to Mangalore it is most pathetic in customer service.

The Mangalore city is smart city without smart people. This is the reason Air crash families to date waiting for compensation.

Selling Sandige, happala and pickle is better than sitting idle or going to other country and work like slaves and beg.

We are living a respectful life here in our country. Be part of democracy. Involve in selecting the Government. Doing what ever possible to the mother land where we born, used the resources to get education.

Sandige, happala and pickle maker of Mumbai like, Shri Krishna vadapav, MM Mithaiwala are billionaires today. Don't under estimate Pakoda makers.

Mr. Prabhu, If a person going other country and work there is slave if u think, then what about the persons who are working under some companies or government jobs, are they not slaves.

CEO of Microsoft, earlier CEO of Pepsico, are Indians, are they slaves. Can u provide jobs to all Indians who work abroad, you or your Govt,. can't . No Indians are going other country for begging. Everybody can not be Doctor or Engineer, only few can be, if all become Doctor or Engineer then who will be the patient and who will work. Everybody loves his or her mother land. There is no democracy now a days in India. a daily wage worker has to pay if his bank balance is less than thousand rupees. Why this only in India, is it coz of democracy. Involve not in selecting Government but in making more and more political parties.

Indians, who work abroad remit Billions of rupees to India, to their families, which improves Indian Economy.

Every time you say people who go to gulf are slaves. Looks like you have a lot of inheritance & good family background with sufficient bank balance. Perhaps you should find us a job in Mangalore or elsewhere in India or get us employment in your company with a good salary. Can you do that ? Are you able to get us a job with a salary of at least 40,000 INR to look after our family because we have children going to school.

If you are so worried that we are going to work as slaves then you should definitely find a job for us OR Don't speak what you can't understand.

Good Riddance of nasty mallus.. No problem we will pay more money for flying and also bear the brunt of reduced frequency of aircrafts from our city.

At least the malayalam speaking passengers will be avoided and the KL vehicles who ferry them in breakneck speed from Kasaragod to airport.

As such we are satisfied with fighting for beef related issues. So no need for development. It is sacrilege to expect any development with Benki and pistol

All those who are lamenting up on & cursing Nalin and Shobha (Don't know for what) please understand that Kannur Airport was accorded sanction in 2006.

Centre was being ruled by UPA1 then and Kerala was being ruled by the Left, CPI(M) Achutanandan was CM. Also Left parties were supporting the ManmounSingh led UPA1.

Agree that fast track on this took place in 2016 when Gajapati Raju was Union Minister of Civil Avaition and Pinnarayi forced the TDP Minister who had soft corner for Left forces to Fast Track the project with an outlay sanction of 35 Crores.

Problem is utterly frustrated guys will ooze out hatred at the slightest pretext on this forum and bad mouth everyone.

All those who are commenting here and happy that mangalore will benefit and will be free from our neighbors etc etc should try and understand this is not a good news for mangaloreans. Because the immediate impact will be as below
    1. There will be a in passenger movement in/out of airport
    2. Airlines will reduce frequency or stop flying to mangalore
    3. The impact will be lower options and higher airfares

Comparatively airfares from/to Mangalore airport is cheaper than Kerala sector. Also distance from Kannur airport to Mangalore is 160+ Kms & from Kannur airport to Kasargod is 100+ Kms. Hence there won't be much impact on MIA. The main impact will be on Calicut airport.

    Mangi's, be realistic....
feeling jealous of Mallu's is natural !!
But Airports are built on statistics ; current number of passengers and expected growth..(Nalin K and Shobhakka can't sponsor tourists to visit them everyday).
If Mangalore promotes tourism all the way up to Karwar, with major upgrade of our beaches and river fronts, even domestic tourists are enough to move the business forward. Even a Major highway upgrade to Bangalore via Dharmasthala would bring lots of pilgrims and tourists.
