Hinduism is ideal religion for modern age of incertitude: Tharoor

New York, Sep 21 (IANS): Hinduism is a "wonderful" religion suited for the modern era of uncertainty and questioning because it values incertitude, according to Congress MP and author Shashi Tharoor, who also excoriated the politicisation of the faith.

"Hinduism rests on the fact that there is a heck of a lot we don't know about," Tharoor said on Thursday during an interactive session at JLF@NewYork, the edition of the Jaipur Literature Festival.

What makes it fit for today's world, he said "the first is the wonderful fact that in an era of uncertainty, incertitude, you have uniquely a religion that privileges incertitude".

About creation, the Rig Veda actually says "where the universe comes from, who made all of this heaven and earth, may be He in the heaven knows, may be even He does not know", he noted.

"A religion that is prepared to question the omniscience of the Creator is to my mind a wonderful faith for a modern or post-modern sensibility.

"On top of that, you have got extraordinary eclecticism" and since no one knows what God looks like one is free to imagine God as one likes in Hinduism, he said.

The Congress Party MP, who is the author of "Why I am a Hindu", took issue with those who condemn the religion as built on misogyny and discrimination.

About the Laws of Manu, he said, "there is very little evidence as to whether they were observed" and there were many texts that existed.

Of these texts, "I don't think every Hindu took the advice of the Kama Sutra, either", he joked.

"For every misogynistic or casteist pronouncements (in Hindu texts) I can give you other equally sanctified texts that preach against casteism," he said.

He explained that Hinduism "is not a religion of one holy book, but of multiple sacred texts. There's an awful lot to pick from. What you pick is up to you. If you choose to pick the misogynist or casteist or offensive bits of the religion and say my religion allows me to discriminate against people or to oppress people, it is your fault not the religion's."

He made a distinction between religion and social practices that are not based on faith.

Tharoor's expansive and deep explanation flies in the face of campaigns in the US against Hinduism with claims about caste discrimination and misogyny, including attempts to disrupt the World Hindu Congress earlier this month in Chicago.

Tharoor held out hope for the spirit of tolerance and acceptance to triumph in India.

The spasms of bigotry were a passing phase in India because tolerance and acceptance of the other was "built into the bones" of the Indian people, he said.

"That kind of bigotry that we have seen whipped up in the recent years is essentially a political exercise and to my mind not in any way reflective of the spirit of most of the Indian people," he said.

"You can't really change their fundamental nature," he added.

The "resurgent Hindu nationalism is actually based on a dismaying inferiority complex" of those who feel their "religion has been conquered, subjugated; they feel a humiliation, an ancestral humiliation", he said.

"Whereas the Hinduism that I have seen, read, grown up with, practiced and being taught is a much more self-confident Hinduism," he said, conceding that the approaches may be a sign of a north-south divide.

Comment on a religion by a politician is far more dangerous than a chronic bacteria of a cancer patients. Tharoor is a learned intelligent personality, acknowledged. Somewhere hidden within heart lies the thorn, a chronic bacteria trying to unearth but since not in power he is trying to cultivate paddy field intelligently. Hinduism is not a religion it's a culture, a wise thought of wisdom. Hindu waani is sanatan DHARMA (nature law); of one lakh saloka by BRAHMAJI during satyug modified to 10k by dwaparyug by BRAHMAJI himself. Then came GOUTAM BUDDHA changed everything , that is middle path.. eliminated extreme. And this philosophy shall be adopted across the world when the educated lot will find it most suitable with the time. So sanatan dharam going to last for ever as it adopts with time.

the beauty of Hinduism is that it give respect to other religion people & even though a person who don't have faith in Hinduism or non-believer of hindu gods then also it treat them as our brothers & sisters. & never discriminate. we cant see this kind of attitude elsewhere.

Totally agree with you. We grew up alongside our Hindu brothers without knowing Hinduism - Christianity - Islam are different religions. Why this generation is so bent upon giving different identities? Hinduism never harms any one. It is a tolerant religion; else no foreigners would have ruled and looted INDIA. This is where i find RSS or BJP wrong. Do not identify hinduism as a sole religion; we are all one tree with various branches.

whatever religion on this earth. if it has the basic principle " do unto others what you want others to do unto you" then that religion can coexist with other religions. if this principle is not enshrined in the texts of any reliigion, then such a religion can cause conflict with others. Some religion create a superiority complex among its believers. the religious texts itself say tht the beleivers are superior to other human beings . Bulk of the text is devoted to unbeleivers.

I am sure that bulk of Hindus have not studied their religious scriptures. There are multitude of texts. Therfore the religion is very flexible and does ot impose laws on its beleivers. Hindusism is therefore a way of life. The religious texts have only guidance value and nothing else.

I agree with Mr. Tharoor. That is why India, a country with 120 crore population has 80% Hindu population. Hinduism should be practiced such a way that it should be spread all over the world by it's popularity...

RSS and Sanghis, spoiled the name of Hinduism.
Fanatical Muslims forming terror organizations, spoiled the name of Islam.
Greedy and Self Centered clergy spoiled the name of Christianity.

The truth is, people who proclaim custodians of culture or faith are actually spoiling it. They are getting stronger by the day and larger in their numbers.

Problem : Silence of the true follower. They are absolutely speechless and spineless, when it comes to wrong doing comes from within own belief. Largely they defend the wrong doing either with their silence or acts, beneficiary being the wrong doer. Each day wrong doer is getting more powerful in his presence than a true follower.

How long? The answer will be given by history.
