Udupi, Jun 5: In the first elections held for the post of the president of the Kaup town municipal council Soumya Sanjeeva from Kothalakatte ward has been unanimously elected while Usman has been elected as the vice-president through elections.
The elections were held on Saturday and there was a competition between two Congress candidates Soumya and Malini. The party responding to the councillors had given the ticket to Soumya. Soumya was elected unanimously.
For the post of vice-president there were two candidates, Usman from Congress and Arun Shetty from BJP.
Along with the vote of urban development minister Vinay Kumar Sorake, Usman secured 13 votes while due to the absence of MP Shobha Karandlaje, Arun Shetty secured only 11 votes.
Soumya is the honorary teacher at Kavu Dhandatheertha Kannada school and is the daughter of Kothalakatte Babbuswami temple priest Sanjeeva Gurikaara and Baby. Being a B Ed graduate, she got elected as the councillor at very young age.
Addressing the media persons she said that her goal is to develop the Kaup municipal council as a model municipal body by developing the infrastructure, drinking water facility and underground drainage system.
Vinay Kumar Sorake while felicitating the new president said that Kaup municipal council will be the center for Kaup constituency. A plan has been proposed to make it a model town with an outlay of Rs 132 core and various projects will be implemented soon.
Tahasildar Guruprasad, Kaup municipal council executive officer Mable D'souza, Kaup block Congress president Naveen Chandra Shetty, district Congress vice president and ZP member Wilson Rodrigues, TP members U C Shekhabbha, Geetha Wagle, director of fisheries board Deepak Kumar Yermal, party leaders Dr Deviprasad Shetty, Ida Gibba D'souza, Madhava R Palan and others were present.
