Karkala, Jun 6: “32% of the female population is illiterate in India. More than 68 lacs children do not go to school. The education is the only barometer to gauge the progress of any country. Only with a great increase in the number of educated people, the country can see real development.” said bishop of Udupi diocese Dr Gerald Isaac Lobo.
He was speaking after inaugurating St Joseph’s English Medium School new building recently at Belman. He also presided over the function after the Holy Eucharistic.
“Christians who are 1.8 % of the population have contributed 20% to the development of the nation.” Bishop added.
Bishop honoured Fr Lawrence B D’Souza the parish priest of Belman church who was instrumental the concept and execution of the new building of the institution with a history of 120 years.
Former MLA H Gopala Bhandary who spoke on the occasion said “The institution ranked second in the few institutions with a history of more than 100 years in Karkala taluk. The achievement of the school is praiseworthy. The role of Christian missionaries, in the spheres of education and health, is exemplary. They are known for discipline, quality and value based education. “
Parish priest of Belman as well the correspondent of the school, Fr Lawrence B D’Souza welcomed. CBE secretary Fr Jerald D’Souza, Fr Lawrence D’Souza from Udupi CESU, zilla panchayat member Reshma Udayakumar Shetty, taluk panchayat member Asha Devendra Shetty, Belman grama panchayat president Mallika Rao, entrepreneur N Subhash Hegde, Karkala education officer Manmohan H, old students association president Xavier D’Mello participated in the programme and wish the best. Fr J B Moras the assistant priest, Fr Joshwin Praveen D’Souza, vice president of parish council Gregory Menezes, secretary Lydia Aranha, Sr Usha Stella, school development committee president Ronald D’Souza were on the dais.
