Mandya, Jun 6: Superintendent of police (SP) Sudhir Kumar Reddy here on Sunday, June 5 dismissed a police constable from service with immediate effect.
N Ramakrishna is the person dismissed, He is constable attached to the District Armed Reserve (DAR). The reason cited for the dismissal is 'dereliction of duty.'
The dismissal order reads that Ramakrishna had violated the law and hindered the functioning of the police department by staging a protest on Saturday, June 4 which was a scheduled to be police stir day. The stir did not get good response as anticipated. Police personnel throughout the state had turned up for duty on that day.
Police personnel were warned with consequences if they dared to go on strike. But Ramakrishna staged a lone protest. He was then taken into custody for violating the police rules.
Ramakrishna says that his protest was symbolic and his attempt to submit a memorandum and grab the attention of the government was misconstrued as protest. “My gesture has been treated as a protest and disobedience and I have been dismissed from service,” he said.
Ramakrishna also alleged that DAR sub-inspectors Somanna and Somashekhar have been harassing the constabulary. “Those who are collecting ‘hafta’ are favoured. The vacant posts of drivers are being filled through lottery and not on seniority basis. Several complaints lodged in this regard to SP Sudhir Kumar Reddy have failed to elicit any response,” he lamented.
Ramakrishna said he would take the legal route against the dismissal order.
