Karwar, Jun 11: After four persons including two sailors of the navy and two civil workers inhaled toxic gas when working on sewage treatment plant on aircraft carrier, INS Vikramaditya at Kadamba naval base here, two died of asphyxiation. It is gathered that they were engaged in maintenance work in the sewage treatment plant of the aircraft carrier when the tragedy occurred on Friday June 10 evening.
All the four were immediately taken to the Patanjali naval hospital at Karwar but two of them could not be saved. Two others have shown improvement in health condition and their condition is stable, sources said.
The deceased happen to be naval staff, Rakesh Kumar (28) from Bihar, and Mohandas Kolambikar (27), an employee of Royal Marine Company, it is gathered. Mohandas was from Amadalli village in Karwar taluk. Their deaths occurred as unexpected large scale inhalation of toxic gases.
A case about these deaths was registered in the rural police station here. Investigation has been taken up.
