Bengaluru, Dec 30: Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee President D K Shivakumar on Thursday claimed that the rural, as well as urban voters, were tilting in favour of the Congress party as is evident from the election results in the recent local body polls as well as in polls to the Legislative Council seats from both the urban and rural local bodies.

``I am claiming that the Congress party has started winning only because of me or after my becoming the State Congress President. What is however clear in the series of election results are that the voters in both the urban and rural areas are clearly shifting in favour of the Congress party,’’ he said warmly complimenting the voters for their support.

Shivakumar said the elections are normally won by the ruling party, especially in constituencies represented by the ruling party members. However, what is clear is that the people have shown their faith in the Congress party even though the BJP is the ruling party in the State. This indicates popular support, he said and promised to come out with facts and figures after getting details of the full results.

Asked if the election results were indicative of the trend in the coming assembly polls in 2023, the KPCC Chief said it was left to the media to analyse and come out with their findings. ``As far as I am concerned, I am happy that the people have reposed their faith in the Congress party. Let the ruling BJP analyse the results and come to their own conclusions. But it is not possible to ignore facts,’’ he said.

Shivakumar mentioned that he has been making all preparations for the Congress party’s padayatra for demanding implementation of the Mekedatu project, including daily walking for at least one hour.

He sought the support from all sections of society and said everybody is free to join the padayatra as it is an apolitical agitation to press for the needs of the people.

The KPCC Chief promised to give details with facts and figures as well as dates on the detailed project report (DPR) done during the Congress party rule. The DPR was prepared when he was the Water Resources Minister, he said pointing out that during the tenure of Siddaramaiah as Chief Minister the process for preparing DPR was started and M B Patil was the ten Irrigation Minister.

``I know the drinking water problems of people in Bengaluru and surrounding areas, especially those living in high rise buildings and apartment blocks, who have to depend on tanker supply,’’ he said.
