Puttur: Farmer innovates unique ropeway system, saves time, hard work

Daijiworld Media Network – Puttur (MS)

Puttur, Jan 5: The coastal districts and Kasargod district in Kerala geographically consists of land that is uneven. The houses of farmers are generally in elevated areas and the farmland will be at a depth of 30 to 40 feet. This makes the work of taking manure, fertilizer down to the farm as well as bringing the produce up towards the veranda of the house very tedious.

Srihari Bhat, progressive farmer and resident of Sajamgadde near Perla has found a unique solution for this issue. Srihari Bhat has introduced a ropeway to transport the manure to the farm as well as bring the produce from the farm to the veranda of the house.

This ropeway connects the house and farm of Srihari Bhat. Things with more than 50 kilo weight also can be easily transported through this ropeway. Some parts are required to manufacture this ropeway. But Srihari Bhat has successfully implemented the same in his farm.

Srihari Bhat used two rotating couplers and clamps to make the ropeway. He also made an iron stand in his veranda which is nine feet in length. It is buried three feet inside the earth to hold it firmly. Iron cable of 8 mm length is fixed on both ends and a moving coupler is fixed on the cable. A fixable non-moving coupler is fixed in the veranda. The maximum capacity of this is more than 200 kg. The bag of arecanut which weighs 50 kilos reaches the veranda from the farm within minutes.

Road is made in between the farm so that that ropeway reaches everywhere. In addition, there is a manual hand cart with two wheels. The produce is gathered from all ends and filled in gunny bags. This whole system costs Rs 15,000. This can be borne by selling just 25 kilos of arecanut. Nearly 50 percent of effort and time is saved through this method. Srihari Bhat is urging other farmers also to make use of the same equipment.

Looks like Great invention, But description is not clear. 8mm cable can it be of length ,it should be of diameter. Better if a photograph is sent so that others can improve on the system. How much force one has to apply to draw the load upwards . Is there a winch.? How to hold when the load is allowed to slide down. Does it work like drawing of water from the well. There are many questions to be answered .
