Daijiworld Media Network – Mangaluru (MS)

Mangaluru, Apr 19: A wall painting is being done in the heart of the city in order to depict the culture and rituals of Tulunadu, which are very different from those of other parts in the state.

The wall paintings consist of Kambala, Kola, Nemotsava, Bandi, Cock fight, Rathostava, portraits of Veera Rani Abbakka, Parashurama, Appannana Katte (Hampanakatte), Jamboo Savari and Hampi chariot festival. In addition, social awareness messages, educational awareness, health and clean green Kudla are also giving the city an attractive look.

In all, 94 works of art have donned the 1350 feet long wall from Wenlock Hospital to Clock Tower of the city. More than 30 artists have painted these mind blowing pieces.

Dilraj Alva of Mangaluru Foundation says, “Mangaluru city is one of the cleanest and most beautiful cities of India. Lacs of tourists come here every year. The aim behind this artworks is to introduce our culture to the tourists and also to prevent the sticking of wall posters.”

Slogan ‘I Love Kudla’ will be written at one spot on the wall. This will be 20 feet wide and 4 feet in height. This is a prelude to the Swaccha Mangaluru campaign of Sri Ramakrishna Mission which will begin once again from the month of May.

Swami Ekagamyanandaji of Ramakrishna Math said, “Under the direction of Ramakrishna Mission, the wall painting is being done at Hampankatta by the Mangaluru Foundation. These paintings are done with the theme of ‘Clean and Green Mangaluru.’ These will depict the variety of culture in Tulunadu.”

Beautiful depictions in the huge wall panels in Hampankatta in Mangalore are a breath of fresh air and a visual treat to the eyes! We are grateful to the artists who are doing great work despite the sweltering heat in this summer. Hope people have the civic sense not to spit paan on them. (my fear)

This is a good initiative. We also need to create our own Tulunad State. We are Proud Tuluvas and not Kannadingas. We are wrongly branded as Kannadingas.

This is not happening because ,Tuluvas who call themselves as intelligent are actually dumb people ....They proudly speak kannada at home ,even though their mother tongue is Tulu .. Some kind of inferiority complex bogs them . They think if one does not transact in kannada then he or she is uneducated Shudra . Do not misunderstand me ..I am not against any language .. but I am against people who are not proud of their own mother tongue . .. .Tulu has been ignored since the formation of States on linguistic basis .. The part from north kerala ,,south kanara ,udupi and districts bordering DK/UDUPI are essentially part of Tuluva dynasty .. Unfortunately the so called leaders of our region ,where too much engrossed in drinking kali, eating bhuthai when the states where formed .. Even now the Tuluva leaders are too much afraid to talk about their rights at the state and central levels ..

The wenlock hospital wall badly needs a whitewash and the laterite base of the walls have lost their plaster giving an ugly look. Perhaps the authorities could have redone that before handing over to the enthusiastic artistes.

Jossey Saldanha, Raheja Waterfront do you think these painters are not aware if that.... they just do their social service by painting such walls to make city beautiful and not for gaining money...
