No party is committed to making Dalit a CM: A Narayanaswamy

Mysuru, May 5 (IANS): Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment A. Narayanaswamy on Wednesday stated that no one is interested in according the Chief Ministerial post to a Dalit.

"No party has commitment towards the assurances given in this regard and it has been a matter of publicity," he said.

"The statements are confined to make promises during elections for political gains. The whole discussion on making Dalit as Chief Minister is being done to carry out politics," he said.

"Whenever elections are round the corner, these statements will come up and once the elections are over, the statement is conveniently forgotten, the Union Minister stated.

The Congress party in Karnataka had the opportunity to make Mallikarjun Kharge as the Chief Minister when Dharam Singh was made the Chief Minister.

Kharge was a 9-time member of Lok Sabha and minister. Though, Mallikarjun Kharge was the senior-most leader, he did not get the opportunity, Narayanaswamy said.

Later, senior Congress leader G. Parameshwar had the opportunity to become the Chief Minister of Karnataka. However, he was defeated by his own partymen in Congress. The leaders conspired and ensured his defeat, the Union Minister said.

"Now, JD-S party is proclaiming that it will make a Dalit chief minister. They have shunted out Dalit party president. All talks are just topics of debate. None of them wants to give a Dalit the highest post," he said.

In 1979, there was an opportunity to Jagjivan Ram to become Prime Minister. After fall of Morarji Desai and Charan Singh governments, Janata party president Chandrashekhar requested Neelam Sanjiva Reddy to invite Jagjivan Ram to form the government. But Sanjiv Reddy rejected the demand and dissolved the parliament.

We have a dalit president, why not a dalit CM, CJI, amd other top positions, if qualified, not because she or he is a dalit. It is time this caste labelling is banned for good and the country move forward ; if it hasn't i n 75 years and clings to caste discrimination - and to reservations to overcome it - there will continue to be a mental "apartheid" in the upper classes.

By becoming a CM never expect Dallits will be considered as upper class Hindus over night. India may change but not their mind set.

Narayana talks about Congress and JD(S) not making a Dalit member the chief minister, but does not talk about his own party not elevating a dalit member to that post. He knows very well that BJP will never accord that post to a dalit. The last ti.e they made a Dalit the president of their party, he asked for bribe in foreign currency. ओम ।। नारायण नारायण ।। ।

There should not be anything like this in politics... Dalits are well taken care of nowadays... They have filled almost all upper and middle posts in government entities... Unfortunately we have only seen more corruption due to this... Politics is already corrupted... Undeserving Dalit if becomes CM only by reservation there will be disaster...

As long as caste and creed are the main criteria in elections, India cannot move forward. Need of the hour is capable educated leaders with a vision. What needs to be done to improve the lot of the Dalits and other backward people is give them quality education an support, then join the rat race for jobs, which includes politics, then show your mettle. In the corporate world performance counts to rise up the ladder, mediocre employees won’t rise ...
