AN APPEAL

Malavalli is a small and insignificant town in the district of Mandya. The catholic parish called St. Mathias Church is so small that it has only 15 catholic families with 60 Parishioners, mostly migrated from Padukone near Kundapura in Udupi District during the late fifties. They were coppersmiths by profession and came over for better prospects but without any success. This parish is under the Diocese of Mysore and the then Late Bishop Mathias Fernandes immediately after his consecration as Bishop, becoming aware of the presence of this small community of Catholics needing spiritual ministry, bought a piece of land there in 1964 and had a simple shed like church structure put up, which is in a dilapidated condition today.

A sad and unfortunate incident of an attack took place on this church on 3rd, February 2010 during which it was ransacked and the Blessed Sacrament desecrated. The small catholic community was under shock due to this saddest event in their life. Since the repairs meant almost renovating the church, the Bishop of Mysore having consulted the construction architect and contractor, recommended construction of a new church and hence, the project is now being undertaken.

The total cost of construction of the new church (Civil and electrical works, interior etc.) is estimated at Rs. 26 Lakhs (Rupees twenty six lakhs) . The parishioners who are financially not viable are also unable to generate necessary funds. Hence, I have no choice but to appeal to men and women of goodwill to come forward with a generous heart to help us in realizing our dream of putting up a worthy House of God in this remote area of Malavalli to the joy of this migrated catholic community and the Glory of god.

While the donors’ intentions will be honoured and respected, I extend my sincere thanks to the well- wishers and donors whom I am appealing for financial assistance through this forum in the name also of my parishioners to help us to realize this much needed venture of a new church of St. Mathias at Malavalli.
