Dwayne Johnson was apt choice for 'Moana', says co-director

Los Angeles, Nov 8 (IANS): "Moana" co-director Ron Clements says actor Dwayne Johnson was the perfect choice to lend voice to the character of Maui in the Disney film.

He said only Johnson, who started out as "The Rock" -- a popular figure in professional wrestling who then made a transition to Hollywood, could have done justice to the larger-than-life character.

"He is very connected to his Samoan roots. Maui is a charismatic character and Dwayne is nothing if not charismatic. He has great comedic timing, nails the action scenes and is so likable. And he can sing," Clements said in a statement.

"Moana" also marks the singing debut of Johnson, who will soon be seen on the silver screen with Indian actress Priyanka Chopra in "Baywatch".

Directed by Clements and John Musker, the feature film is about an adventurous teenager who, with help from demigod Maui, sails out on a daring mission to prove herself a master way finder and save her people.

Talking about Maui, Clements said: "He has an all-encompassing drive to succeed that gets him into trouble, but facing the reason behind it isn't easy."

Johnson is also super excited to be part of "Moana", which will release in India on December 2.

"To tell a story inspired by the South Pacific is a great honour," Johnson said.
