Bofors scam: CBI to probe possible sabotage angle by Rajiv government

New Delhi, Oct 18 (PTI): The CBI on Wednesday said it would look into the "facts and circumstances" of the Bofors scam mentioned by private detective Michael Hershmam, who alleged that the Rajiv Gandhi-led Congress government had sabotaged his investigation.

Hershman, who is the president of the US-based private detective firm Fairfax, claimed in television interviews recently that Rajiv Gandhi was "furious" when he had found a Swiss bank account "Mont Blanc".

Hershman, who was here last week to address a conference of private detectives, also alleged that the bribe money of the Bofors gun scandal had been parked in the Swiss account.

"The agency has learnt of the matter pertaining to the Bofors aired on certain TV channels containing interview of Michael Hershman," CBI informationa officer and spokesperson Abhishek Dayal said in a statement.

"Facts and circumstances as mentioned in the interview will be looked into as per due process by the CBI," he said.

Hershman was quoted as telling television channels that Rajiv Gandhi got very upset when "our work was uncovered". He then established a Supreme Court commission to look into the circumstances surrounding then finance minister V P Singh's hiring of Fairfax.

In his interviews, Hershman has expressed his willingness to testify and help Indian agencies on the Rs 64 crore Bofors gun pay-off scandal but the effort has to be a credible one.

The Bofors gun continues to give India 'an edge' over its adversary on the Line of Control and has helped the country win 'artillery duels', till the time the ceasefire came into effect in 2003.
With a range of over 35 kms in the high-altitude terrain, the gun helped us win artillery duels with Pakistani Army on the LoC till the 2003 ceasefire between the two countries.
The FH77 Bofors guns, he said, were better than the medium artillery guns available with the Pakistani Army.

"Superiority of our guns, which can fire three rounds in 12 seconds, has been proved during the 1999 war and they also know that their guns are of no match to our medium guns. After Kargil, the guns proved their mettle during Operation Parakram in 2001 also, where they would fire 80-90 rounds every day causing immense damage to enemy posts and morale," the officers added.
"With the Bofors guns now being deployed at such high altitudes and its extended range here, we can strike deep within the enemy territory. The Bofors can easily take on targets in Pakistan occupied Kashmir towns such as Skardu and others,".
If this guns are not part of Indian army logistics ordered by former PM Rajiv Former Gandhi, Vajpayee government would have faced difficulty with more casuality on Indian side and difficult to hit Pakistani's deep inside their own territories.
For BJP 'Bofors gun' still remains to be subject of corruption which made Indian army to reclaim Kargil once again. But it has forgot its own corruption of 'coffin scam' which its government ordered from USA. They have also mess of 'bravery awards'.
For BJP soldiers deaths fought liberate Kargil is not a scam, but 'Bofors gun' which gave victory is only scam.

The Bofors scam has been flagged so much by the BJP that it hardly evokes any interest. Such issues only surface whenever any elections are due. As for the CBI it has lost all credibility and viewed as a caged parrot. High time to make this agency autonomous so the Govts of the day do not misuse it.

V P Singh ascended the PM chair after he used it to the hilt to dethrone Rajiv Gandhi,
Now should we say V P Singh too was hand in glove to hush up the investigation?
V P Singh after he was deposed said it was only a weapon he used to gain power & in no way Rajiv was involved.
30 to 40 year old cases were no records can be unearthed now as in those times no computer existed or any records or witnesses have passed away, it is nothing but Feku attempt to divert the allegations in an effort to "Beta Bachao" Scheming only. First Vadra & now this, now people who had forgotten the past or weren't born at that time & wanted only Vikas but failed to find any vikas will see the ulterior motive.
People Suffering & Politicians playing games- beginning of the end seems imminent.

This is going nowhere since ages. There were 4 non-congress govts that came to power after bofors scandal. All of the these Govts vowed to uncover the truth of bofors, but failed. This include Vajpayee Govt, which went further ahead and submitted the court to close the case.

It is a separate matter that the bofors guns that nailed Pakistan during Kargil war, with its performance. What it implies is there are someone who wanted to stop congress from providing best arms to our army.

A private detective now says he has information on Bofors. Excellent, any corruption at any level must be looked into. However, this detective knows only Rajiv was upset on his personal and private investigation. He must be so much talented and powerful detective to know even emotions of the person he is probing. I can therefore vouch that he has no substance, but wants to earn something out of publicity.
