Goa church flip flops on Constitution comment

Panaji, Jun 5 (IANS): The Goa Church on Tuesday tried to tone down the sharp criticism of the political environment in India in Archbishop Filipe Neri Ferrao's annual pastoral letter, with a senior official at the Bishop's House insisting that "one or two statements" made by the top church functionary were taken out of context.

"One or two statements of the Bishop have been taken out and I will say taken out of context and made an issue out of. My thing is this, we do not make any further comments and explanations of the letter.

"If you want you read the (pastoral) letter online and try to understand the context why it is being said, what is said," Secretary to the Bishop Father Joaquim Loiola Pereira told reporters here.

The pastoral letter, which was formally released by Ferrao on Sunday, had said that the Indian Constitution was in danger and that that a "new trend" of mono-culturalism, which demands uniformity in what and how one eats, dresses, lives and even worships, was putting human rights at risk.

"At the time of elections, the candidates confuse the minds of many people by making false promises. And the people, on their part, often sell their precious vote for selfish, petty gain....

"In this context, particularly as the general elections are fast approaching, we must strive to know our Constitution better and work harder to protect it.

"Today, our Constitution is in danger, (it is a) reason why most of the people live in insecurity," Ferrao said in his pastoral letter for 2018-19 which was formally released on Sunday but circulated only on Monday.

The pastoral letter is an annual letter written in June by Archbishop's to Church parishes across the state.

Ferrao, as Archbishop of Goa, is the spiritual and religious leader of Catholics in Goa who account for 26 per cent of the state's population of 1.5 million.

    Shetty, Mangalore,
No guys are fighting for Azaadi, some political leaders are playing with citizens for internal conflict and misunderstanding between them. No human is born as Hindu or Christian or Muslim or Jain or Sikh or Buddhist. If u do not know the struggle and living conditions of Indian soldiers better not to comment or advise to join Indian Military. Better u to join and advise others to join to serve the Nation. There is no religion in Indian Defence Services. All religions are equal. A MLA or MLC or MP gets handsome pension after 5 years what a soldier gets even after 20 years of service..

Please dont blame the Bishop, as he was appointed by the pope, head of vatican, which is a different country.
He has to promote Vaticans Agenda, or else will lose his job.

    Mahesh,

You seem to be envying the systematic functioning of Christianity with one head for the followers of the religion in the whole world. Whereas, the religion you boast to being the oldest in the universe, has no head, no tail nor anything.

Please note, the Pope doesn't dictate the administration to Bishops in India. They perform as per local conditions and situations. Indian Christian leaders are highly educated, many of them Phd holders in literature. They are trained in administration - their training goes for more than 15 years, after which only they are ordained and priests and they climb up the ladder in positions with experience.

We know how much" head" or "tail " or any other part your head has .don't compare Ur religion to other religion in terms of managing the religion.every religion has its own style of functioning.you comment about your head or tail of Ur religion but don't try to comment on other religion which you have not studied / have any knowledge.
Hope you understand even though you too don't have head / tail to know about other relifion

    Mr.Prahu,

I give a pragraph about Christians' contribution in Freedom Struggle. Enjoy :

    Quote
The proportion of the Indian Christian delegates to the Freedom Struggle was much higher than their proportion in the population. Some of the prominent Christian leaders in the Congress in this period were R.S.N. Subramanian, a prominent barrister from Madras, Kali Charan Banerji from Bengal, G. G. Nath a barrister from Lahore, Peter Paul Pillai of Madras and Madusudan Das, a lawyer from Orissa.3 Barrister George Joseph from Kerala was an active participant in Home Rule movement and closely associated with Annie Besant.

Accamma Cherian was a freedom fighter from the erstwhile Travancore (Kerala), India. She was popularly known as the Jhansi Rani of Travancore,4 Titusji, another Gandhian, participated in Salt Satyagraha and followed Gandhiji on his March to Dhandi.

    Shetty,

How is it troubling you if somebody wants to be called 'd'souza, d'costa, fernandes' ? Does it make them foreigners ? Do you know ? Christians in Kerala and Tamilnadu don't use a surname at all ? They use their native/house name in addition to their first name.

Its time you stop being grudging of envious for whatever reason you are holding that.

Too late. India was fought and liberated from the British, unitedly by Hindus, Muslims, Christians, Buddhists, Jains and all. Indian Constitution was drafted, edited and finalized by a number of people, to suit all the people who unitedly earned the freedom for the nation. Amendment to the Constitution has taken place in the past but changing it into a Hindu nation will take another battle of Azaadi.

Are you guys ready for it ?

    Harish,

I have absolutely no problem with Mr. Modi becoming PM of India on a second term. What I dislike of him is weeping in front of the people assembled to hear him speak, by saying 'Desh keliye Ghar-parivaar chchoda' which is an open lie. A lie besides many more that he let flow during past four years. Because, he has no parivaar. Not even his mother with him - his brother is taking care of her.

    Kishore Kumar,

Big Brother (of Nepal) Modi tried his best to keep the country under his knuckles, in attempt to keep it a Hindu nation. Well, nothing seem to have worked favourably because the nation asked Indian media to leave the country for obvious reasons.

If Nepal takes help from neighbouring countries (like Modi's Helicopter), its on humane grounds, including from China, its a goodwill gesture.
