I met Mrs.Lena Fernandes, addressed as Mam, in St. Aloysius Evening College Mangalore. Though I have not been her student she had taken only one class when a lecturer was absent. We came to know each other in due course and I found out that she was such a sweet soul. Though soft hearted she wore a mask of a strict lady. It was a delight to speak to her for you touch any subject she could speak about it and she had gift of gab.

I was a student of Mrs Lena Fernandes at St. Aloysius evening college where she was also the principle. She certainly was a subject matter expert and handled her official position with both strength and empathy. But what made me fond of her was who she was as a human being. With a welcoming smile and an easy laugh, she would indulge with students at their level making her office so accessible. In those days people of authority kept their distance and were more feared than loved. But Lena Fernandez turned this upside down and I respect and think about her to this day. My interactions with her has taught me to be humble when in a position of strength, empathetic towards others and generous with my time and talents. What a teacher, what a leader…. What a human being.
