Farewell to you dear Rev Fr John Fernandes. You will be dearly missed from our midst. Fr John Fernandes started his priestly ministry in Mangalore Diocese as an Assistant parish priest in Bejai parish for a short period of (may be 10 months) during my very early childhood years. A man with a simple persona & without an air of sophistication about him. A very highly educated young priest in his time in the early 1960's, but humility was his mark. Poor people and the troubled youth were at the heart of his service. He will be remembered by many as truly a good priest. May God grant him eternal rest & everlasting peace to his departed soul.

Dear Family of Fr. John: A noble heart has stopped beating and a noble soul has acsended to heaven. I cannot describe in words my feelings on the occasion of the sad demise of our dear Fr. John. I remember my own overwhelming joy when he arrived in our Bijay parish in 1964 and my disappointment when it was announced that he has to move to Rosario within few months. I even wrote to the Papal Secretary Cardinal Cicognani in Vatican to use his influence to withdraw this decision taken by our diocese but in vain. Later Fr. John played a vital role in my life when he introduced me to a devoute German couple in a little German town when I came here for my higher studies in 1972. Being the only foreigner in this place I could unfold myself freely and fulfill all my dreams by starting my own projects for the Germans: scientific and social as well as cultural and religious, reporting him regularly of my progress and success. Thus when I published my very first documentary book of this little German town, I was able to include his name and photographs in my book relating his contribution to our German society in the 1960s. To my surprise the book won the German Cultural Award and was accepted by the German National Library in Berlin. Therefore I feel a great deal of satisfaction of immortalising him among others in this prestigious way. His own fascinating autobiography published both in India and Germany is an authentic report, in which he scholarly edits his extraordinary lifetime struggle to improve the lives of the poorest of the poor. It is also a story of his travels and trials to promote interreligious relationship which echoes his voice saying „The world is my parish!“. Through his deep spiritual contribution he has influenced the educational and cultural life in Mangalore. Let me conclude with the words of Pope John XXIII- „Fr. John is not absent from us but just invisible to our eyes and will continue to be our new guardian angel". We really lived with a Saint!

Dear Jerry dattu & Lidia voni, Though we could not attend the Funeral service today personally, we watched it through Daijiworld YouTube from start to end. First of all, please accept our heartfelt condolences! May Almighty give you'll strength and courage to bear the pain & sorrow at this sad demise of our uncle Fr. John! I think, we lost the last remaining elderly member in our family, your maternal uncle and first cousin of my Mom! As you know, we met him on March 20th on Philip Uncle's death anniversary Mass and on March 24th, Patrick uncle's funeral mass, both celebrated by Fr. John. He was looking healthy, though looking weak and we never thought this will happen, so soon! In fact, he called me to come and meet him at Jeppu and I thought of going but because of pandemic and lockdown etc. we could not meet him again! Hope, we will continue our contact / relationship which we learnt from our loving elders to keep up our family bond, to remember & refresh the love and affection shown by our elders in the family! Let us pray, may our good Lord welcome our uncle's Soul into Paradise and grant him, eternal Rest! adieus dear Fr. John uncle, Rest in peace!

Very sad to know about the death of Fr. John Fernandes. Fr. John was a very intelligent person and was very humble and soft spoken. I was fortunate to meet him very often at some family gatherings. My last meeting with him was in March 2021 when he came to Kundapur to celebrate the first death anniversary mass of his cousin. He was weak at that time but sharp and stable. I never thought that the end is so near. Rest in Peace Fr. John, you have run your race well.

Fr. John was my Mom’s first cousin & i have had the fortune of growing up in his presence & knowing him closely. Being the only son of his Widowed Mother ( he had 2 elder sisters ) but despite that she encouraged him to join the Seminary. Upon asking by Fr. John to his mother as to who will look after you once i join the seminary, she replied, God will look after her. Such was her conviction as she knew that unless she gives this comfort, then only her son wud comfortably take up this chapter in his life. All his life Fr. John toiled for the people. He travelled a lot, understood various cultures & was a bridge for harmony between all religions as he used to regularly interact with them. I once asked him a question as who will go to heaven out of the two, one a devout Christian & one an Atheist. What if the devout Christian goes to mass regularly , fullfills all religious activities but is not good in his deeds & the Atheist who does not probably believe in God but does his deeds properly & does not hurt anyone. Fr. John replied, it is the Atheist who will be lucky as God judges by the deeds and not just prayers. One has to be good to people around us. This was Fr. John who illustrated his magnanimity thru many such interactions. Feeling so sad that such a person is no longer amongst us. God bless his soul & am sure he must be in his Kingdom along with his Parents & his sisters.

I lost a very near and dear friend. I feel so broken today. He was my mentor and guide when growing. Through him I have many friends in Gernany. He blessed my engagement, my wedding, my silver wedding and baptised my two children as well as blessed my daughter’s engagement. Played a big role in my life! He wrote a book ‘Unbeaten Paths’ which voiced his Theological Reflections on Times of Transition: Living on the Periphery, Crossing Borders and Building Bridges. My sister Mariola (now a Missionary of Charity)are in that book. He autographed and sent me a copy which I proudly read every now and then. Fr. John was a posthumous child. His mother and sisters meant a lot to him. A great priest who lived up to his ministry. He did not preach his religion but lived up to it. Hosabettu owes it to him and I am sure he will be much remembered always. I feel his loss very much as it came in as a rude shock to me. He kept very good health till the end. RIP my dear Fr. JOHN. Love always. I am counting on your promise that my family is much loved and prayed for every day. Can't wait to meet you again when it's our time to cross the bridge.
