John B Monteiro (86), husband of the late Lynette Monteiro, father of Prima and Mohan, father-in-law of Kevin and Neisha, grandfather of Zach and Maya, passed away on July 16, 2024.

Viewing at Johnlyn Cottage, Bondel, Mangalore on Thursday, July 18 at 2.00 pm. Mass in St Lawrence Church, Bondel, Mangalore at 3.30 pm, followed by burial in the church cemetery.

Dear Prima and Mohan John uncle was a dear friend of my grandfather (Anthony Mascarenhas) and special to our family. My parents (Simon and Angeline) spoke fondly of him. A kind hearted and generous person whom both my brother and I were fortunate to know. Heaven celebrates his return as he made earth a better place for so many people whose lives he touched. Dear Primrose. Mohan and families, my heartfelt sympathies to all you. Your dad is a gem of a person. I came to know him a few years ago, thru Stan and Flory Monteiro, your dad's neighbours in Bondel. His articles in which ever media he wrote were very inspiring, educational, and a touch of light humour where it called for. Whether it was on History, Personalities, or everyday affairs, it was great. He has passed away that's very sorrowful, but nevertheless he is in arms of God, He has prepared a place for him in His mansion, where he will meet his wife Lynette, and the two of them will live with the angels for eternity. May the good Lord bless and grant you'll to bear the loss lovingly.

“I am deeply saddened by the passing on of John B Monteiro, a day before his 86th birthday. John was 8 years younger to me. My heartfelt condolences to you Prima and Mohan, and pray to God to give you both strength as now both your parents are no more. I have known John for several years, though virtually and not in person as our paths never crossed either in Mangalore or in Bombay, but had several email exchanges respecting many of his special articles in Daijiworld. He brought Mangalore of the Past, the way I had known, alive through these special articles, its culture, architecture, its communities, food, feasts and festivals, and institutions both Catholic and Hindu. More importantly he wrote a short article on me when I published the Konkankit Primer and proudly displayed in an email along with my good friend Ivan Saldanha a paper copy that I had mailed to him and to Ivan. I still have that photograph somewhere in my email archives. Thank you John again. May the Lord grant you eternal bliss in his Kingdom and if there is the slightest chance, let you bring cheer with your laughter to the eternal choir. Amen.”

Great personality - a personal loss and a loss to fast changing Smart Mangalore. I have been his admirer from December 1970.....when my father showed me his article on Mangaloreans and culture in the popular "The Illustrated Weekly" .....I have been in touch with him since 2002 when i commenced my quest of history here in this city. I recall how he met me to visit the 'Nethravathi Railway Bridge' from Mahakalipadapu end. Ever since we have been in touch and I have visited his place few times and met him , interacted with him, very often. All a memory now very sad to see him buried today. We all will go to Eternity one day. GOD is Good. RIP.

It's indeed sad that dear Freind John is no more with us. He was so youthful and enthusiastic about everything. He laughed and made others laugh. His laughter club brought positive vibes. His articles, thousands of them, in different media empowered youth and filled the riders with wisdom. He was essentially a South Kanara man, deeply interested in everything about the history and culture. In his passing we have lost a historian, writer and a person with positive thinking. We are deeply saddened by the passing of John Monteiro. He was my father, John Fernandes' best friend for over 60 years and he was also my sister's godfather. We lived close to each other and spent many weekends together. Prima was considered to be our youngest sister. My sister was truly blessed to have him as her godfather. He never missed a birthday and was always there for her on all her special occasions. He was a jolly man always laughing and full of life. We visited him a couple of years back in Mangalore with my Dad and it was great catching up. He gave each of us a copy of his 50th anniversary issue of Canara Catholics. It was wonderful to see the issue. He will be missed by all of us in the Fernandes household. Our heartfelt condolences to Prima, Mohan, Kevin, Neisha, Zack and Maya.
