Br Joseph Alvares SJ (85), passed away in Mangalore on Monday, December 12, 2011.

Mortal Remains will be brought to Fatima Retreat House at 2.30 pm on Wednesday, December 14 to pay the last respects. Funeral Service Mass at Fatima Retreat House at 4.00 pm.

Dear Rev Fr.Victor D'Silva,S.J.
Received your letter with the news of passing away of my dear friend of 60 plus years.I knew Br Joseph from Christ Hall when I was a novice Jesuit Brother for another Province in India from where I had to leave the order. Even after leaving the order I kept in contact with this saintly Brother who was an inspiration to all for his humility.Even after leaving India for USA to teach Physics as an exchange teacher in 1969,we kept our friendship even though I became a US citizen. We communicated each other till this past Chrstmas, I did send my greetings along with my usual gift of cash which he could not receive since my letter arrived at Asha Kiran probably late for which you have acknowledged with the Brother's departure news. Let me also tell you about my visit to India in 2003 November Br.Alvares went beyond his normal duties of a Jesuit Brother got special permission from his Provincial Most Rev.Fr.Prabhu to accommodate me for two weeks in St. Joseph's School in Bangalore where Br.Joseph was serving as Minister for the Community.I 'm profoundly grateful to this Brother and to the Province of Karnatak. All of us will cherish in our memory the acquaintance of Br.Alvares.May his soul rest in peace.

Br Alvares was an exemplary Jesuit and a man of prayer. He has silently served in the Lord's viniyard, mainly taking care of his fellow Jesuits and even assisting the Provincial of Karnataka. I have fond memories of Br Alvares during the two years at Mount St. Joseph, Bangalore. I have no doubt Br Alvares has attained eternal bliss !
