Dr Miss Mary Agnes Saldanha (97), daughter of the late Joseph Louis Saldanha and Louisa Saldanha, sister of Marie Mascarenhas, Aloysia Fernandes and the late Edmund, Noel, Martha Mascarenhas and Gemma Coelho, passed away on Wednesday December 21.
Funeral cortege leaves residence at 10 am on Tuesday December 27 for Milagres Church, Mangalore.
She was a much learned person, with MA in English Language and Literature from University of Madras (1930), and PhD and MEd from Syracuse University (with a Fullbright scholarship), New York (1956).
She was professor of English and principal, Lady Amritbai Doga College of Women, Nagpur, founder-principal, Saraswati Girls' College, Gondia and principal, Bhopal School of Social Science. She also wrote poetry. She was the first president of the National Council of Catholic Women, which was founded in Nagpur in 1966.
After retirement she settled in Mangalore, where she served as president, Ladies Social Service League at Milagres parish, secretary, Family and Welfare Committee, Milagres parish and secretary, Milagres Housing Society. She was recipient of the Papal honour - Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice.
