Health Related : Question & Answer:
HEART VALVE DISEASE
Q) What is valvar heart disease?
It is a disease involving one or more valves of the heart.
Q) Which are the valves in the heart?
There are four valves at the exit of the four chambers of the heart and it helps to maintain flow of blood in a forward direction. The four valves are mitral, aortic, tricuspid and pulmonary valves.
Q) What are the types of valve heart disease?
There are mainly two types (a) Stenosis or narrowing of the valve. (b) Regurgitation or leaky valve where the blood flows backward through the valve.
Q) What are the causes of valve disease?
There are mainly two types (a) Acquired - The commonest cause in India is rheumatic heart disease followed by infection of valve (Endocarditis) and cancer and some drugs also cause it. (b) Congenital - Seen at birth (c) Mitral valve prolapse - seen in 1-2% at the population.
Q) What are the symptoms of valve heart disease?
The symptoms include shortness of breath, weakness, chest discomfort, palpitation (awareness of your own heart beat), swelling of legs and weight gain.
Q) How is valve heart diagnosed?
Your doctor will get a detailed history and examine you by which he will get an understanding of your valve problem. He would confirm it by an echocardiogram or a Trans - eosophageal echo or an angiogram.
Q) How is valvar heart disease treated?
There are mainly three goals of treatment (a) protecting the valve from further damage - This is by antibiotics to prevent infection of valve. (b) Lessening symptoms with medications like diuretics to control your heart rate and medicines to reduce the back flow of blood. (c) Surgery for the valve.
Q) What are the surgical options for valve disease?
The damaged valves can either be repaired or replaced using an artificial valve depending on the extent of damage. Also in early cases and in pregnant ladies a balloon mitral valve repair can be done.
Q) What are the risks for cardiac surgery?
All valve diseases should be operated at the earliest, since the more prolonged the disease the damage to the heart is more. So if the surgery is done at an early stage, the results are excellent. But a delayed presentation for surgery increases the risk.
Q) What are the precautions to be taken after valve surgery?
The most important thing is to assess the blood thinning by checking the blood INR which has to be monitored regularly by your doctor. Also any potential infection should be immediately treated with antibiotics. Even dental extraction should be done with an antibiotic cover. Also regular medications and check ups atleast every 2 months by your doctor is necessary.
