Mangaluru, May 15: The Karnataka Maritime Board has prepared a report proposing an international cruise terminal at Someshwara in Ullal, Dakshina Kannada, according to the Board CEO Jayram Raipur.

The report states that there is a substantial demand for cruise tourism with tourists seeking water transport experiences along the Western Coast of India. Says Raipur, “Panambur is a cargo port but the one at Someshwara would be a passenger port.” As per the report, this terminal will not only cater to the needs of the region and the nearby states but will also attract international tourists, emphasising the urgency of its construction.

The region has been adversely affected by prolonged sea erosion resulting in substantial land loss over the years. Consequently two offshore reefs (200 meters each) funded by the Asian Development Bank have already been constructed about 600 meters from the shore.

In this vicinity the draft is around eight meters. The terminal will not only make use of the reefs but also mitigate the ongoing issue of sea erosion in this area.

The coastal areas of Karnataka and northern Karnataka have plenty of tourist spots and religious places. The international airport, railway station and National Highway are close by.

The report states that the estimated budget of the project is Rs. 2,030 crore involving construction of breakwater, dredging, berth, road, other civil works, establishment expenses and project preparatory expenses.

The crucial infrastructure facilities like an administrative block, hotel, terminal building, public amenities and parking space would be meticulously planned to ensure a seamless experience for passengers and visitors. A four-lane road has been planned to connect National Highway 66.

Raipur added that the National Institute of Technology, Surathkal, is preparing the feasibility report, which would be sent to the Centre for financing.
